About the Item

This is an important Welded Steel Wire Brush Sculpture (bundled wire), executed by Harry Bertoia ca. 1965. Bertoia personally developed this method of fusing wires and rods together to suggest a larger form, as seen in his brushes, his bushes, and later in his development of Sonambients. He adopted and developed many metalworking processes over the course of his decades long career. This sculpture is made with stainless-steel wire that has a melt coating, a common practice that he employed to add interest to the surface of his sculptures. In the early 1960s Bertoia is said to have been "intensely involved" in his work with stainless-steel wires. The triangular shape of the brush base on this piece is of interest, as he often created circular or rectangular grids. It was Bertoia's custom not to sign his works because he believed that the piece itself was a signature, and that a signature called attention to the artist rather than the work of art. As such, we will supply a copy of the sales slip from the art gallery who sold it to the most recent owner. It was sold by Robert Kidd Gallery in 2007 (in Miami Beach, Florida). This sculpture is 7 inches long, 7 inches wide, and is 34.5 inches high. It is in very nice condition, with a differentiated patina on the welds vs. the steel wire bundles, and some scuffs to the plinth base. Please see photos.
