Pair of Fine Japanese Export Lacquer Cutlery Knife Boxes, 18th Century
Located in Amsterdam, NL
A pair of fine Japanese export lacquered cutlery boxes Kyoto or Nagasaki, late 18th century H. 33.5 x W. 24 x D. 21 cm The bow-fronted boxes with sloping lids flat at the top are made of hinoki wood (Cypress), coated with Japanese paper and decorated in lacquer with scattered gold birds and flowers on a nashiji background. The Japanese mounts are made of copper and both boxes still have internal partitions to keep the cutlery upright. The form of these boxes is similar to a pictorial-style knife box in the collection of the Groninger Museum (inv. 1989- 347), dated between 1730 and 1780, but the style of the decoration is more like that on a knife box in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem (inv. E62271), which was brought to Salem by James Devereux, Captain of the Franklin, in 1799. Provenance: Henriette Jeane Christine van Neukirchen, called Nyvenheim (1807- 1849) and Nicolaas Johan Steengracht van Oostcapelle (1806-1866), thence by descent to the last owners, Ludolphine Emilie baronesse Schimmelpenninck van der Oye (1944) married in 1969 to Roland Daniel van Haersma Buma (1944), the last residents of castle Duivenvoorden near Voorschoten and the great-great-granddaughter of Nicolaas Johan Steengracht van Oostcapelle. There is no evidence that Nicolaas Johan himself, or any of his or his wife’s ancestors had ever been in Japan. However, Nicolaas’ grandfather (Nicolaas Steengracht, 1754-1840) was a director of both the VOC and WIC (West Indies Company...

Huge Kaneaki Fujimori Collection Art Glass Platter Kato Kogei Japan, 1985
By Fujimori, Kato Kogei
Located in Melbourne, AU
Just wow! A huge, gorgeously colourful Kaneaki Fujimori platter. This will display equally well standing, hanging or flat (we prefer it flat because this emphasises the generous size). We love the shocking white of the background which makes the colours pop. We love the smooth gloss of the glass. We love the slightly off-kilter and ovoid shape. It’s a total winner! Kaneaki Fujimori for Kato Kogei 1980s - a classic piece of Japanese postmodern Art Glass. Signature etched to base and original sticker also attached. Red, Green, Yellow and Black are swirled through clear glass, over a milky-white background. Delicious and punchy. Not for the faint-hearted decorator. This piece is loud and assertive. Delightful and fun, with extravagant size and a glossy smooth finish to reflect light and attract the eye. There are some natural flaws which we’ve tried to illustrate in images. These include numerous small bubbles, mots and blemishes. The images are an example, with match-head for scale. Comes with a lucite stand to raise the plate a little higher off surfaces if desired. Kaneaki Fujimori is one of Japan’s preeminent artists and designers of the 20th century. Fujimori was born in Japan in 1935, graduating college in 1956. He majored in oil painting. He travelled to the US and worked in Chicago, Illinois, as a designer for a major ceramics firm. He returned to Japan in 1963, and became a freelance designer for various companies in Nagoya. At age 19, he had won the national art award (for painting) in Japan. Many other awards followed through the 1980s. At the time of the production of this work, he was the director of Kato Kogai, a ceramics and glassware company which was a major supplier to the international market during the 1980s. Reference to his work can be found in the book ‘1950s Then and Now’ by Richard Horn, a publication from the 1980s which compares original 1950s design with new 1980s design done in the 1950s style. He is most well known outside Japan for his lively 1980s ceramics...

Pair Imari Jars Made in the Meiji Period, Japan Circa 1880
Located in Katonah, NY
Hand-painted in Imari designs, both jars show beautiful waterside scenes in cobalt blue, gilt, and two tones of iron red. The colors are exquisite and intense. We see water lilies, lotus, peonies, and bellflowers. One jar shows a shoreline the other a cresting wave. Above the main scene on each jar is a medallion with gilded floral decoration. Around the shoulder and the base of each jar is a ring of decoration inspired by Japanese textiles. The hand-painted panels on the reverse echo the panels on the front of the jars but with many subtle changes (see image #8). On the side of each jar, we see a traditional Imari image of a vase on the garden terrace. The pair were made in Japan in the Meiji Period, circa 1880. Dimensions: 15" tall x 7" diameter at the widest point. Condition: Excellent. Price: $3,460 Background of Late Imari Porcelain: Imari porcelains were first exported from Japan to Europe in the 17th century. In the third quarter of the 19th-century, Imari porcelain found an eager export market in Europe as the style was compatible with the colors and designs of the oriental rugs used...
