About the Item

A rare and exceptional Aesthetic Movement Doulton Lambeth art pottery handled jug of zoomorphic style by renowned artist Eliza L Hubert and dated 1879. The elegant bird shaped stoneware jug stands raised on a round foot with a flat base and has a squat round body with the handle formed like a tail resting on the upper body with a leaf terminal to the lower end and a coiled splayed terminal at the upper end. The jug has a tall funnel shaped neck with a head formed top with a shaped crop to the back and a rounded beak shaped pouring spout. The body of the jug is finely decorated with scrolling leaves and flower heads with raised beaded trailing set against a fine fern pattern salt glazed brown ground. The jug is hand painted in tones of blue and brown with white elements. The jug has impressed makers marks along with incised initials ELH for Eliza L Hubert and is dated 1879. Offered in good condition with usual signs of wear associated to age and use. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market
