About the Item

Excellent large and rare Meissen figurine from the 19th century: Fully sculpted porcelain figurine of an antique-style young beauty standing in a dancing pose in an elaborately pleated white dress that skims her body, decorated with golden stars and red hem, her curly hair pinned up and decorated with a golden ribbon and rose petals, holding castanets in her hands, her right hand resting on her hip and her other arm elegantly raised in front of her, the head turned to the side in a slight twisting motion. The figure is supported from behind by a tree trunk and stands on a stepped, grooved square base with gold edges. An impressive, dynamic figure in a classic, realistic style, revealing sculptor Ernst Julius Hänel's penchant for large-scale sculpture. A Vestal virgin was a Roman priestess of the goddess Vesta. The priesthood of the vestal virgins consisted of six, and in late antiquity seven, priestesses who were appointed at the age of six to ten for a minimum of thirty years of service. Their main task was to tend the hearth fire in the Temple of Vesta, which was never allowed to go out, and to fetch water from the sacred spring of the nymph Egeria, which was used to clean the temple. They also prepared the mola salsa (a mixture of salt water and grain) and the suffimen (ashes of unborn calves), which were needed for certain cult rituals. In matters of worship, the Vestal Virgins were subject to the College of Pontiffs and, in particular, to the Pontifex Maximus as their disciplinary superior. Their personal social status was in many ways equivalent to that of a Roman man, but they also enjoyed numerous special privileges. During their term of office, the Vestal Virgins were bound to chastity. The loss of a Vestal Virgin's virginity was considered an ominous sign for the Roman community. An unchaste Vestal Virgin was removed from the priesthood and could be buried alive. Modeller: ERNST JULIUS HAENEL (1811 - 1891) Sculptor, studied at the academies in Dresden, Munich, and Florence, created numerous sculptures for Gottfried Semper's buildings in Dresden, as well as monuments and portraits in a classicism-oriented realism style, Professor at the Academy in Dresden from 1848, co-founder of the Dresden School of Sculpture in the 1860s, the Meissen manufactory acquired a total of 39 models from him between 1848 and 1884, mainly reductions of his existing works. The model L 171 was created in 1880.
