About the Item

Excellent large and rare Meissen figurine group from the 19th century: A breathtakingly beautiful young woman with her hair tied up and large butterfly wings on her back, naked except for a large yellow cloth wrapped around her legs, sitting on a tree trunk with oak leaves and watching a butterfly on her left hand, supported on her lyre. Based on flat round earthen base with leaf covering and lateral gold edge, artist's signature 'R. Hölbe, Dresden' on the back on a stone. Very rare version with a natural flat base. Psyche and Cupid: Psyche is the youngest and most beautiful of three beautiful daughters of a king. She is so beautiful that everyone stops worshipping Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus is angry and calls her faithful son Cupid, ordering him to make Psyche fall in love with a bad man. The father sends his daughter – as the oracle of the god Apollo has commanded him – in a bridal gown to a lonely mountain peak, where she is to marry a terrible demon. But Cupid himself succumbs to the unearthly beauty of Psyche, and after overcoming great obstacles, his love triumphs. In a figurative sense, love (Cupid) and soul (Psyche) are inseparable. Modeller: RUDOLPH HÖLBE (1848 - 1926) Sculptor, professor, studied at the academies in Leipzig and Dresden, student of Johannes Schilling, member of the Allgemeine Deutsche und Dresdner Kunstgenossenschaft. The Meissen manufactory acquired seven models between 1885 and 1899. The model N 196 was created 1882-1885.
