Paul Milet Sèvres Porcelain Hinged Dresser Box with Ormolu Mounts

This French porcelain box was designed by Paul Jean Milet, son of Felix Optatus Milet. Felix Optataus Milet began his career as a modeler for Sèvres in 1862 and opened his own ceramics factory in 1866. His son Paul took over operations shortly before the turn of the century and ran the company until 1931. This early 20th century rectangular porcelain dresser box has been finished in a saturated mottled blue/green flambé glaze. The box has a domed lid and is fitted with ormolu mounts featuring a foliate closure at the front. The inside and underside of the box are finished in a cream color. The box is largely in good condition with no scratches, cracks or repairs. As an antique item the box shows signs of age commensurate with light use consisting of two flakes to the glaze on the rear left corner and a small area of missing glaze at the bottom right front corner. The underside of the piece bears the black Paul Milet mark reading PM Sèvres and Made in France. The box weighs in at 1lb 4oz. This striking French porcelain box is nicely sized to hold a variety of sundry items and displays beautifully. A pretty and useful piece.
