About the Item
This charming pair of gilded olive brown Mintons pâte-sur-pâte footed moon flask vases feature a romantic caged putto motif executed in white slip on a black ground. The smiling plump putti have diaphanous wings and are depicted cavorting on the grid-like bars of their cages. The hand tooled pâte-sur-pâte decoration on each piece is encircled by a gilt foliate band.
The reverse of both vases bear raised gilt decoration consisting of stylized flowers and leaves with beaded accents, all of which are arranged in a symmetrical radial composition. The shoulders are adorned with white raised enamel scrolls edged in gold which are set against a contrasting robins egg blue ground. The decoration at the shoulders includes a series of densely painted fine linear gilt accents while the sides of the vases bear gilt foliate pendants which echo the design encircling the putti. The neck and feet are also trimmed in delicate gilt ornamentation.
The underside of one vase bears the Mintons gilt crowned globe mark while the other retains its original paper label from London retailer Daniell of Wigmore Street. The vases are signed with artist monogram AM for Arthur Morgan who apprenticed with Louis Solon.
These masterfully decorated Mintons pâte-sur-pâte porcelain vases are nicely sized for display on a mantel or shelf. A striking pair with enduring appeal.

Minton
Pottery is one of the oldest decorative art forms, and Minton is one of its historical masters. For more than 250 years, the English company was a premier producer of porcelain and ceramic wares. Its factory was known for detailed and brightly colored Victorian tableware, including dinner plates and serving pieces.
Thomas Minton founded the Minton factory in 1793 in Stoke-upon-Trent, England. It initially made earthenware but introduced bone china in 1798. When Minton died in 1836, the company passed to his son, Herbert Minton. The younger Minton was a savvy businessman with an eye for design. He introduced glossy majolica earthenware to the factory’s repertoire and hired skilled artists and designers like Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, boosting the company’s reputation.
In 1851, Minton debuted its majolica at the Great Exhibition in London. It became a royal family favorite and was even used to tile the Royal Dairy at Windsor Home Park. Minton majolica was also displayed on the monumental Saint George and the dragon fountain at the 1862 London International Exhibition.
Colin Minton Campbell, a nephew of Herbert Minton, took over the family business in 1858. He led the company to the head of the 1870s English art pottery movement. In the 1890s, French porcelain artist Marc-Louis Solon helped modernize Minton with his Art Nouveau designs.
Minton ceased operating as an independent company when it merged with Royal Doulton Tableware Ltd. in 1968. It was the end of an era, but not the end of widespread appreciation for Minton ceramics.
In 1982, the ”English Majolica” exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum featured 75 Minton pieces. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art reopened its British Galleries in 2020, it included a display of three colorful Minton majolica bird sculptures. Minton pottery was also on display from September 2021 to January 2022, along with other English pottery, at the Bard Graduate Center’s ”Majolica Mania” exhibition.

This striking amphora Art Nouveau vase was made in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel, established in 1892. The vase has an ovoid form with a thick molded floral and foliate band located at the neck. The body of the vase rests upon a raised pedestal foot decorated with a series of intertwined stylized roots. The neck and foot have been glazed in a matte green color with burnished gold highlights. The body of the vase is flanked by a pair of arched gilded handles made in the form of naturalistic woody branches.
The body of the vase has been finished in a mottled matte glaze executed in a dull gold color enabling the cream color beneath to show through. The center of the vase transitions to a violet hue which is covered by a high glaze iridescent band having pink and purple undertones. The iridescent band features an armorial crest executed in black accented with gilded details. The crest itself consists of a checkerboard shield surmounted by a trio of stylized flowers with a spade motif, all of which are flanked by lions rampant. The design includes a series of large dots arrayed in a symmetrical manner. The opposite side of the vase echoes the motif found on the front and has a checkerboard shield, nine spade-shaped flowers and several dots.
The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece shows minor signs of age and use consisting of wear to the gilded decoration. The vase stands 11.75" tall and is 2.25" across the mouth. The foot is just over 5" in diameter and bears impressed marks including a circular ''Imperial Amphora Turn...

French Gilt & Patinated Bronze Garniture with Applied Foliate/Floral Decoration

This exceptional late 19th century three-piece French garniture includes two footed urns and a low footed centerpiece bowl. The urns and bowl are composed of patinated bronze with ormolu mounts which include neoclassical mask detail and rest on square marble plinths with ormolu bases. The pieces have distinctive elongated handles at the sides which terminate in stylized pendant decoration. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the exterior of the urns and bowl feature applied bronze decoration in the form of ornate foliate swags with flowers. Please be sure to zoom in on the photos to better appreciate the detail of the cast decoration, it is impressive.
The urns stand 15.75" tall as measured to the top of the rims. The handles are 5" from edge to edge as measured from their outside points. The feet are 4.25" square.

This early 20th century Art Nouveau porcelain vase was designed by Paul Dachsel for Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Amphora of Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia. The piece has an organic squash-like form and features Dachsel's distinctive ribbed mouth design at the top. The body of the vase is flanked by two delicate arched arms with reticulated detail.
This ivory porcelain vase has a blush colored body with gilt accents at the foot and handles. The front and back piece have been hand-painted with a floral motif in a Japanese style and feature the images of gilt accented purple orchids with long green leaves. The ribbed mouth is finished in a matte green that echoes the color of the foliage and also has gilt highlights. An example of this shape with similar decoration can be seen on page 66 of Richard L. Scott's 'Ceramics From The House Of Amphora 1890-1915.
The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece shows appropriate signs of age consisting of wear to the gilded decoration. This ceramic vase and lidded jar were designed by Aldo Londi, art director for Bitossi ceramiche in Montelupo, Italy. Both pieces feature large stylized flowers and have been finished in Bitossi's rich Rimini blu glaze reminiscent of the Adriatic. The underside of the jar and vase bear stamped and hand-painted manufacturer marks and retain their original Rosenthal-Netter paper labels.
The lidded jar measures 16.5" tall with the lid, 5.5" wide at the base and 4.5" across at the mouth.
The vase stands 8.5" tall, 6.5" at its widest point and 4.375" across at the mouth and foot. The combined set is substantial and weighs 10lbs.
