Large Abstract Studio Pottery Stoneware 'Pagoda Pot' by Alan Ashpool England 70s
Located in Sherborne, Dorset
A stunning three hooped ‘Pagoda Pot’ by Dorset potter Alan Ashpool, with a flared bowl to the top, tiered forms made from a mixture of thrown and slipcast sections joined together, culminating in a bell shaped base. Predominantly in an ecru colourway, followed by a dark grey glaze, then a turquoise/blue glaze, culminating in a stunning bronze manganese glaze. There are also beautiful blue flecks in the ecru finish, which were created in the firing process. A wonderfully impressive and tactile piece measuring 40cm in height, in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Alan Ashpool backstamp to the base alongside the original address label. Dorset based potter Alan Ashpool, studied pottery under Heber Matthews (1905-1959), a foremost student of William Staite Murray and teacher of Hans Coper. During the 1960s Ashpool’s pots were sold in leading design stores such as Heal’s, alongside those of Dame Lucie Rie...

Black basalt figure of Bacchus. Wedgwood C1780.
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
Exceptionally rare early figure of Bacchus in black basalt. The mixed-case mark places this figure between 1780 and 1785. He is portrayed in typical style, his head garlanded with grapes and with a wine cup to his lips. Bacchus, also known as Dionysus in Greek mythology, is the enigmatic god of wine, fertility, and ritual madness. He symbolizes freedom, ecstasy, and the blurring of societal norms through his rituals and festivities. Bacchus is often depicted in myths as a deity who challenges the status quo, promoting an atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply, and his followers are liberated from their everyday constraints. Born from Zeus and the mortal Semele, Bacchus is unique among gods, bridging the divide between the divine and the human. His followers included the wild and ecstatic maenads, female devotees who often reached states of divine frenzy, and the satyrs, mischievous half-man, half-goat beings. The worship of Bacchus was marked by theatrical processions, dances, and plays, reflecting his patronage of the theater and the dramatic arts. Bacchus’s mythology...

Antique Judaica Wine/ Water Ceramic Large Jug with Allegorical Images
Located in Doha, QA
This remarkable antique ceramic jug, likely from the late 18th century stands as a testament to symbolic craftsmanship and cultural interweaving. Its white-glazed body, adorned with intricate blue hand-painted motifs, showcases a rich tapestry of imagery: two armored knights flank a central coat of arms crowned by a noble eagle, evoking themes of protection, authority, and divine oversight. A sphinx, emblematic of riddles and ancient wisdom, is also depicted- a nod to the Jewish people’s historical sojourn in Egypt and the enduring significance of that epoch in Jewish memory. A goat as representative of the Devil to make Adam and Eve to sin and take a forbidden fruit in Paradise. Clusters of various fruits embellish the design, symbolizing abundance and the promise of the land. Prominently featured are two Stars of David, affirming a deep connection to Jewish identity and heritage. The jug’s sculpted handle, fashioned as a coiled snake descending toward a human face-possibly representing Adam-recalls the Genesis narrative of the fall, the serpent, and the origins of humanity. This interplay of symbols suggests a narrative arc of struggle, survival, and spiritual endurance, potentially representing the journey of the Jewish people from Eden through exile and beyond. The jug’s substantial capacity-holding up to five liters of liquid-indicates its intended use for wine or water, both integral to daily life and ritual. Its distinctive shape, featuring a wavy, ornamental opening, hints at Mediterranean origins, likely Spain or Italy, where such design elements were prevalent in ceramic art of the period. This stylistic attribute, coupled with the painted date of 1527, adds another layer to its historical context. The year 1527 holds significance in Jewish history. In that year, Hayyim ben David Schwartz, a notable Jewish printer, obtained permission to print Hebrew books...

19th Century Pair of Polish/German Stoneware Figures
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19th century pair of Polish/German stoneware figures. Quite rare! Not a matching pair but similarly themed, with the little girl holding a basket of kittens with one kitten climbing up her front and the other of a little boy climbing a tree stump with a snail at the base. The ‘Little Girl’ is painted stoneware or earthenware and we are of the opinion is Polish in origin (or possibly Russian). It does not have any identifiable markings but it was originally with another similar style figurine (not included in this sale) which had markings that we were of the opinion were Polish markings. The ‘Little Boy’ is painted pottery and we are of the opinion that it is either Polish or German in origin. It is slightly different in style an texture to the girl and has a more ‘bisque’ finish. The facial features are more defined and remind me of German bisque dolls...
