Prattware Pottery Macaroni Tea Caddy, Possibly Prestonpans. Scotland
Located in Downingtown, PA
Prattware English Pottery Pearlware Tea Canister,
Macaroni Figures,
Possibly Bankfoot pottery, Prestonpans. Scotland or Staffordshire,
Circa 1790-1800.
The pearlware pottery tea caddy is decorated with Macaroni figures. On one side is depicted a gentleman wearing an exaggeratedly high wig with his servant standing beside him. On the other side is a similarly caricatured lady and her servant.
Dimensions: 5 inches High x 3-1/4 inches Wide x 2 inches Deep.
Condition: Glaze imperfection to neck.
The caddy was possibly made in Scotland at Prestonpans where plaster of Paris moulds were recovered during excavations.
Plaster of Paris moulds recovered during excavations below the floor of the Belfield Pottery in Prestonpans and almost certainly dumped from the earlier Bankfoot pottery.
The figures are modelled in very full relief and painted in green and brown. The narrow sides of the tea caddy are painted with a flowering vine. In the canted corners of the caddy is a wavy underglaze blue line.
During the 18th century, "macaroni" was the satirical term for men who sported elaborate clothing and continental affectations. Lampooning various occupations and specific styles, these are reproductions of period cartoons.
These amusing figures are after English caricatures produced between 1765 and 1790. The satirical jibes were directed at the young moderns of the time, known as "macaronies."
A group of privileged young Englishmen adopted styles and manners they had admired during their travels in Italy and France. They formed the Macaroni Club (macaroni being virtually unknown in England at the time), an eating club where they vied with one another in matters of dress and manners. Extremes developed and soon spread into larger society. With ribbon-and-lace festooned clothing, prim-verging-on-prissy manners and absurd coiffures, macaronies (both male and female) were subjects of ridicule.
Provenance: Private Maine Collection

English Minton Aesthetic Movement Majolica Nut, Leaf & Vine Pitchers, a Pair
By Minton
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Attributed to Minton pottery in Staffordshire, England, a scarce sized set of majolica glazed pitchers in the Palissy style, circa 1870s.
The Aesthetic Period pitchers are molded with a raised nut vine pattern with leaves in light and dark green, and closed buds. The vine handle is ‘held’ in place with green shoots, the tight buds are glazed in cream encased in light spring green leaves. The body is finished in an iridescent brown, the interior in a beautiful turquoise. A turquoise glazed underside.
The larger jug is impressed with the number two, possibly referring to size, as this is the middle size of what would have been a set of three graduated pitchers...

Antique Judaica Wine/ Water Ceramic Large Jug with Allegorical Images
Located in Doha, QA
This remarkable antique ceramic jug, likely from the late 18th century stands as a testament to symbolic craftsmanship and cultural interweaving. Its white-glazed body, adorned with intricate blue hand-painted motifs, showcases a rich tapestry of imagery: two armored knights flank a central coat of arms crowned by a noble eagle, evoking themes of protection, authority, and divine oversight. A sphinx, emblematic of riddles and ancient wisdom, is also depicted- a nod to the Jewish people’s historical sojourn in Egypt and the enduring significance of that epoch in Jewish memory. A goat as representative of the Devil to make Adam and Eve to sin and take a forbidden fruit in Paradise. Clusters of various fruits embellish the design, symbolizing abundance and the promise of the land.
Prominently featured are two Stars of David, affirming a deep connection to Jewish identity and heritage. The jug’s sculpted handle, fashioned as a coiled snake descending toward a human face-possibly representing Adam-recalls the Genesis narrative of the fall, the serpent, and the origins of humanity. This interplay of symbols suggests a narrative arc of struggle, survival, and spiritual endurance, potentially representing the journey of the Jewish people from Eden through exile and beyond.
The jug’s substantial capacity-holding up to five liters of liquid-indicates its intended use for wine or water, both integral to daily life and ritual. Its distinctive shape, featuring a wavy, ornamental opening, hints at Mediterranean origins, likely Spain or Italy, where such design elements were prevalent in ceramic art of the period. This stylistic attribute, coupled with the painted date of 1527, adds another layer to its historical context.
The year 1527 holds significance in Jewish history. In that year, Hayyim ben David Schwartz, a notable Jewish printer, obtained permission to print Hebrew books...
