Prattware Pottery Pearlware Tea Canister, Macaroni Figures
Located in Downingtown, PA
Prattware English Pottery Pearlware Tea Canister, Macaroni Figures, Possibly Bankfoot Pottery, Prestonpans. Scotland, Circa 1790-1800. The pearlware pottery tea caddy is decorated with "Macaroni" figures. On one side is depicted a gentleman wearing an exaggeratedly high wig with his servant standing beside him. On the other side is a similarly caricatured lady and her servant. The caddy was possibly made in Scotland at Prestonpans where plaster of Paris moulds were recovered during excavations. Plaster of Paris moulds recovered during excavations below the floor of the Belfield Pottery in Prestonpans and almost certainly dumped from the earlier Bankfoot pottery. Dimensions: 5 1/8 inches high x 3-1/4 inches wide x 2 inches deep. Condition: Good with a small firing line to the foot-see photo. The figures depicted on the tea caddy are modelled in very full relief and painted in green and brown. The narrow sides of the tea caddy are painted with a flowering vine. In the canted corners of the caddy is a stylized underglaze blue leaf. During the 18th century, "macaroni" was the satirical term for men who sported elaborate clothing and continental affectations. Lampooning various occupations and specific styles, these are reproductions of period cartoons. These amusing figures are after English caricatures produced between 1765 and 1790. The satirical jibes were directed at the young moderns of the time, known as "macaronies." A group of privileged young Englishmen adopted styles and manners they had admired during their travels in Italy and France. They formed the Macaroni Club (macaroni being virtually unknown in England at the time), an eating club where they vied with one another in matters of dress and manners. Extremes developed and soon spread into larger society. With ribbon-and-lace festooned clothing, prim-verging-on-prissy manners and absurd coiffures, macaronies (both male and female) were subjects of ridicule. Provenance: Private Maine Collection Reference: Haggarty, G 2010 ‘The Belfield Pottery Production Site Ceramic Resource Disk: The Northern Ceramic Society Journal Vol 26 (2009-10), 142-3 + CD ROM. Rare Dutch Church Interior Rozenburg Porcelain Tile Painting After J. Bosboom
By Rozenburg Porcelain
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful large tile painting of a Gothic church interior by W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around. Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...

Early Davenport Ironstone Mug Hand Painted Chinoiserie Pattern 659, circa 1815
By Davenport Porcelain
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a rare and early stone China (Ironstone) mug which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815 made by the Davenport factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England. The mug is straight sided similar to a coffee can and has a loop handle with an upper thumb rest. The pattern is number "659", which is one of Davenport's very few chinoiserie patterns. The bold pattern features striking polychrome enamels of rocks and different flowers all in the Chinoiserie style, hand painted over-glaze in different colours over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is embellished with good hand gilding. There is also a deep border pattern to the inside rim which replicates the outer mug pattern with sprigs of hand painted flowers. The mark on the base of the mug is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...
