About the Item

This magnificent Greek Revival sterling silver footed bowl, crafted by the renowned silversmiths Grosjean & Woodward for Tiffany & Co., epitomizes the grandeur of 19th-century American silver craftsmanship. Created at Tiffany & Co.'s historic 550 Broadway location in New York, this piece is a testament to the exceptional artistry and timeless elegance that defined the period. The bowl is wide and shallow, featuring a stunning flat fretwork rim that encircles the top. The exterior is adorned with intricately applied medallions inset with male youth heads, each surrounded by lush leaf-and-berry branches, effortlessly blending classical motifs with detailed ornamentation. The center of the bowl's underside boasts petal lobing, elegantly adorned with two side handles. These handles are a marvel in themselves, showcasing stylized leaf-caps and split volute scroll terminals, embodying opulence and sophistication. Supporting this piece is a cylindrical structure leading into a domed foot, meticulously chased with leaf-and-berry bunches interspersed with geometric ornamentation on a stippled ground. This intricate detailing reflects the silversmiths' dedication to their craft, creating a piece that is both commanding and refined. Adding to its historical importance, the bowl features an early mark (1854–65) that includes both the makers’ and retailer’s stamps, along with the number 7830. This rare hallmark solidifies its authenticity as a true masterpiece of mid-19th century silver production and artistry. A further layer of sentimentality is found in the engraved inscription on the underside of the foot: "1888 September 24-1913," offering a glimpse into the personal history of this exceptional piece.
