A scarce French Provincial Louis XV (1715-1774) / Louis XVI (1774-1792) Period mixed wood religious oratory (prie-dieu / altar)
Hand-crafted in France in the 18th century, with later 19th century elements, likely originating in the south of France / Mediterranean region, featuring pegged solid wooden construction of warm, rich fruitwood, chesnut, oak, and maple.
Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials. Over a slant-front with star parquetry, the hinged drop-front opens to reveal a distressed leather writing desk / lectern / pulpit on which the holy books can be laid open and allows to shelter the books, which were considered precious goods at that time. The lower sacristy cabinet has a pair of slide-out supports flanking a paneled cupboard door decorated with a large stepped base Christian cross parquetry inlay, affixed with later decorative forged iron faux escutcheon overtop. This is a “Revised Edition” of the Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The book was edited by Charles S. Gleed and published by Rand, McNally & Co., in Chicago in 1883. It has been artfully rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with the original gilt-stamped pictorial front cloth board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a matching archival cloth slipcase.
As explained in the beginning of the guidebook, the purpose of the book is “to give the reader a satisfactory general idea of the States and Territories of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, through which the traveler passes in going from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, or vice versa, entering or leaving California at its southern extremity.” Following the southern route of railways, editor Charles Gleed lays out in extensive detail information on each state, including population numbers, key industries, important towns and railway stations, farming and agriculture, mining opportunities, and weather patterns.
Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The guidebook is also supplemented by pages of printed advertisements in the beginning of the book, showcasing local businesses, services, and wares.

First English Edition Two volumes 8vo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches, 220 x 140 mm. Vol. 1 pp. xvi, 458; Vol. 2 pp. vi, 248, 156, Appendix. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards; five raised bands, gilt rules, decorative motifs, and title on black morocco label spine; hinges and edges rubbed; front hinge of Volume 1 cracked internally; t .e. g., rest uncut. Pages are bright and bindings tight, light foxing on a few pages and typical offset opposite plates.
Vol. 1 includes 3 copper engravings etched by R Fenner, a large folded map 12 3/8 x 21 in / 313 x 534 mm, engraved by R Penny. Two-inch tear to one fold, otherwise solid and some offset; and a page of sheet music with "Dog Dance of the Sioux" and "Chippewa Scalp Dance" Map of the Country Embracing the Oute of the Expedition of 1823, Commanded by Major S H Long. Vol. 2 includes four engravings by R Fenner, 2 of waterfalls and 2 of shells, plus three fold-out calendars and a 9-page "Vocabulary of Indian Languages" in the Appendix.

Handcrafted by Artisans in south Morocco, very fine quality craftsmanship with a stamped leather engraved with Moroccan Tuareg geometric tribal designs.
The arm dagger was a weapon widely used by people across Africa in the Sahara and Sudanic Africa, from the central Sahara to North Cameroon, from Nigeria to Somalia.
It was worn in a sheath attached to the inner side of the left forearm by a loop,
