About the Item

Sciangai is a closable coat stand from Zanotta designed in 1973 by De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi, a piece of history of the best Italian design at an international level, inspired by the ancient Chinese game. Each wooden element of Sciangai constitutes a ground support at its lower end and a support for hats, coats and other garments at its upper end. The components are connected to each other just above the centre, creating a wide circumference of supports at the base, which ensures stability, and a more collected set of hooks for clothes at the top. Jonathan De Pas, Donato D'Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi are three Italian designers who, united under the acronym DDL, have been operating in the industrial design sector since 1966. After the death of Jonathan de Pas (1932-1991), the Milan-based design studio DDL - De Pas, D'Urbino, Lomazzi became Studio D'Urbino Lomazzi. This is a three-voiced professional personality of great relevance for Italian design; the three designers collaborated with the largest companies in the furniture sector, and in 1979 they received the prestigious Compasso d'oro award for the Sciangai project created for Zanotta in 1973. In addition to industrial design, the three designers also dedicate themselves to architectural, exhibition, interior and urban planning projects during their professional lives; but they established themselves mainly for their trendy unconventional style, a pop paradox of the sixties, which they applied to furnishing objects. However, the activity carried out as installers and architects for the 1970 Osaka World Exhibition is of great importance, where they created a series of pneumatic residential buildings for the Italian pavilion. In the field of furniture, their most famous works are the Blow inflatable armchair for Zanotta, the Joe two-seater chair for Poltronova in the shape of a baseball glove (a tribute to the American baseball player Joe di Maggio, who died in 1999). In 1971 they also created a modular bookcase for Longato called Brick and the Sciangai coat stand, again for Zanotta.
