The difference between the two is that hat and coat racks are usually for hanging hats and coats on a wall from hooks, while hat and coat stands are freestanding and may contain a space for umbrellas and walking sticks. Hat racks and stands from the 18th century were often simple hooks, although some were more ornamental.
