BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Caviuna Hardwood by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1956
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this magnificent Mid-Century Modern credenza is entirely made of Caviuna hardwood and consists of six doors, three storage cabinets, six shelves and four drawers. The sides are curved and the structure rests on four legs. The wood has been refinished and besides the marks of age, the piece is in excellent condition. With this Brazilian Modern piece, Giuseppe Scapinelli highlights one of his favorite wood species, the caviuna of light blond appearance with darker veins that the designer knows how to play to form geometric patterns on the front that offers a contrast giving charm and lightness with the legs designed in curves. This credenza effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. The credenza is currently displayed in the gallery with two delicate Joaquim Tenreiro Poltrona...

Rare Natural Blue Lace Agate Slice with Crystal, Blue, and Bronze Agate Bands
Located in Ametista Do Sul, BR
A Superb Blue Lace Agate with a Rarely Seen Combination of Colors and Drawings ▫️ Description A superb slice of agate, this delicate specimen displays geological artistry. This Soledade Agate showcases intact banding in rare blue, bronze, and clear color hues—a truly artistic expression from Mother Nature. Over millions of years, layers of agate formed continuously. Hundreds of tiny bronze and deep blue bands create a frame, while the clear crystal provides the necessary empty space for the agate's central drawing to emerge. Special mention must be made of the central drawing, where rare blue, black, and cream colors form a microscopic landscape, reminiscent of icy terrain or coral formations, with sparkling druzy accentuating its intricate details. This thin slice of agate is translucent, and as you can see in the pictures, backlighting enhances and alters the color perspective of the agate, bringing out a blossoming golden hue. It is a perfect display specimen to place near a window, allowing you to witness the agate's transformation from an icy, cold appearance to a fiery, rich landscape throughout the day. With no cracks and no treatment at all, the agate is of super-extra, gallery grade. This breathtaking blue lace agate slice is a true collector's piece. With details visible from both sides, it's sure to become a part of your crystal collection. Check out the close-up photos to admire the intricate banding and delicate color hues. Have questions? Feel free to send us a message! Have you ever wondered how these mesmerizing blue lace layers formed? Agates typically form within gas bubbles or cavities in igneous (volcanic) rock like basalt. Over time, these cavities fill with layers of silica-rich water. As the water slowly evaporates, it leaves behind a layer of silica gel, which eventually hardens into a solid layer. This process repeats, with each layer potentially containing different impurities that contribute to the variation in color we see in the agate's bands. It's a remarkably slow process, and the result is truly fantastic, right? ▫️ Blue Lace Agate Slice on Stand...

The Square Desk, Square Armchair, Carbonized Finish with Shou Sugi Ban, Japanese
Located in São Paulo, SP
The Square Desk was inspired by the design of Brazilian modern furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, featuring straight lines and Indian straw weaving. It's delicate and highly comfortable for everyday use, seamlessly blending functionality and elegance. The wood's ebonization is achieved through the Japanese technique of charred wood known as shou sugi ban. Crafted from solid freijó wood and adorned with a drawer featuring natural Indian straw. * As they are natural materials, wood, straw and leather may have different tones and textures than those shown in the photos. About the designer: Amilcar Oliveira hails from São Paulo, the capital city. He studied Radio and TV at ECA-USP and worked as a director at production companies like Sentimental Filmes and Your Mamma. Currently, he's part of the directorial roster at Mixer. In parallel, he studied carpentry at the Cosi de Legno school under Piero Calò, carrying on the teachings he received from his father and grandfather, who were both carpenters deeply passionate about this craft. Amidst the pandemic, he created his debut piece, the Square Armchair...
