Extremely Fine Weave Persian Nain Habibian in Floral Pattern with Silk Highlight
Located in Barrington, IL
This extremely fine hand knotted Persian Nain rug, crafted in the 4th quarter of the 1900s, is an exquisite example of the artistry and precision for which Habibian-signed Nain rugs are globally celebrated. Known for their exceptionally high knot count and elegant aesthetic, Habibian rugs are among the most collectible in Persian weaving. Set on a soft ivory background with a graceful pale tan border, this rug features a flowing floral design with accent colors in French blue, pale brown, and ivory. The field design—characterized by circular branching patterns—is reminiscent of the refined style found in Isfahan rugs, lending the piece a sense of symmetry and timeless beauty. The corner spandrels are woven in a stunning blue tone, filled with intricate cream motifs that enhance the overall harmony of the composition. At the heart of the rug lies a brilliant central medallion, enriched with generous silk highlights that shimmer under changing light—creating a subtle three-dimensional effect that brings the design to life. Made with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, and adorned with silk throughout, this rug is a rare and luxurious statement piece—a true masterwork from the legendary Habibian workshop in the city of Nain. Dimensions: 6’ 10” x 10’ 3” ” Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Persia Material: Wool pile on a cotton foundation with silk highlights Condition: Excellent The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU 1239 Nain Floral Carpets, Nain Habibian, Habibian Nain Carpets...

PAK Persian Tabriz Rug 7’9” x 9’9”
Located in New York, NY
Fine Pak Persian Tabriz Design rug, wool, hand knotted Design: Floral all-over A Pakistani rug (Pak Persian Rug or Pakistani carpet) is a type of handmade floor-covering textile traditionally made in Pakistan. The art of weaving developed in the region comprising Pakistan at a time when few other civilizations employed it. Excavations at Moenjodaro and Harappa - ancient cities of the Indus Valley civilization - have established that the inhabitants used spindles and spun a wide variety of weaving materials. Some historians consider that the Indus Valley civilization first developed the use of woven textiles. Carpet weaving may have been introduced into the area of present-day Pakistan as far back as the 11th century with the coming of the first Muslim conquerors, the Afghan Ghaznavids and the Ghaurids. It can with more certainty be traced to the beginning of the Mughal Dynasty in the early 16th century, when the last successor of Timur, Babur, extended his rule from Kabul, Afghanistan to Dhaka, Bangladesh and founded the Mughal Empire. Under the patronage of the Mughals, local craftsmen adopted Persian techniques and designs. Carpets woven in the Punjab at that time (often called Lahore carpets today) made use of motifs and decorative styles found in Mughal architecture. Photograph of Carpet Weavers in Karachi Jail - 1873 During the Mughal period, the carpets made on the South Asia became so famous that demand for them spread abroad. These carpets boasted distinctive designs and high knot densities. Carpets made for the Mughal emperors, including Jahangir and Shah Jahan, were of the finest quality. Under Shah Jahan's reign, Mughal carpet-weaving took on a new aesthetic and entered its classical phase. The carpets woven in Lahore were the first to reach European markets, including England, as far back as 17th century. During the British Colonial era, prison weaving was established in district and female jails in cities such as Lahore and Karachi. Carpet-weaving outside of jails was revived after the independence when Pakistan's carpet-weaving industry flourished. At present, hand knotted carpets are made by Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan, making carpets and one of the country's leading export products. Hand knotted rug manufacture is Pakistan's second-largest cottage and small industry. The craftsmen have the capacity to produce any type of carpet using all the popular motifs of guls, medallions, paisleys (botehs), traceries, and geometric designs in various combinations. Pak Persian Persian inspired curvilinear and/or floral designs, usually styled from old Kashan...

The fascination with Persian rugs dates at least as far back as the 4th century B.C., when historian Xenophon referred to the “soft rugs on which the Persians sit.” For centuries, Iran (modern-day Persia) has been known for the craftsmanship, intricate patterns and artistry of its carpets, which have found their way into households and museums around the world.

Although they have many imitators, authentic Persian rugs are made only in Iran and are easily recognized by their vibrant colors and elegant patterns.

Traditional, or antique, Persian rugs are what most people identify as “authentic.” Hand-made, they are very durable and, if properly cared for, can be passed down from generation to generation. Modern Persians, on the other hand, are often machine-made. Although this production process is much faster and cheaper, the resulting rugs typically do not have the same quality or lifespan as handwoven ones, so traditional options are considered better investments. Today’s carpets, Iranian or otherwise, can’t possibly match the level of craftsmanship that prevailed centuries ago, so historical Persian carpets will always be admired and highly valued.

To distinguish between the two, look for imperfections. Because traditional Persian rugs are handwoven, you will likely see small flaws on the front and back. With a machine-made imitation, on the other hand, you will probably not find stitching glitches, and the back will have a mesh or plastic covering.

Antique rugs are handmade from the finest materials, including wool, silk or cotton — never synthetic fibers. The fibers used in older rugs are colored using natural dyes derived from insects and plants and woven into bold designs that reflect Iran’s culture and history. Since Persian tribes traditionally raised and herded sheep, wool was the most common material. The fiber has many advantages: It is fire-resistant and dries much more quickly than cotton. Also, because of its natural elasticity, it is more durable than cotton or silk. Regarded as works of art, Persian rugs can take months or years to complete.
