About the Item

With their Bauhaus form this pair of ‘A 60 F’ armchairs by Thonet Mundus epitomise avant-garde design. Their arms and legs connect to form a soft rectangular form, giving the chair a gentle yet stable rock. The A 60 series defied expectations with its materiality – its appearance convincingly resembling metal rather than bentwood. Only a year prior, the steel furniture company L. & C. Arnold showcased a near-identical design in tubular steel by architect Arthur Korn in their catalogue. This armchair is a rare specimen from the series, published in the Thonet-Mundus catalogue in 1929.

Pair of Vintage German Minimalist Chrome Black Armchairs from Thonet, 1970s
By Thonet
Located in Warszawa, Mazowieckie
This set of two armchairs was manufactured by the German Thonet manufacture during the 1970s. The frame is made of chrome-plated tubular steel. The chairs are made by plywood and covered with black synthetic leather. The minimalist form adds elegance, and the contoured seat improves comfort during use. Both pieces have manufactory labels. Thonet is the oldest existing furniture company in the world. It began its long business in 1819 when the carpenter Michael Thonet founded a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. In the 1930s, Thonet's experiments with glued and steam-bent wood furniture...
