About the Item

This iconic chair was designed by the Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) for the MASP's auditorium when it still was placed on 7th April street. The writer and curator Pietro Maria Bardi, her husband, says that in 1947 she did not find any modern chair in São Paulo for the auditorium – even with Warchavchik's and Tenreiro's attempts to produce modern furniture. So Lina designed a simple, foldable, and stackable chair to solve such a problem. That way, the Bardis created the notorious companies Estúdio Palma and Fábrica de Móveis Pau Brasil, in association with the architect Giancarlo Palanti, paving the way for several companies in the same segment – as Móveis Artesanal and Forma. Bo Bardi devoted her life to promoting Brazilian architecture and design's social and cultural potential. Her extensive production includes architectural projects, modern furniture, expography, and publications.
