About the Item

Amazing restored 'Campanula' Carver Chair with beautiful tapered form brass legs by Italian architect Carlo Pagani (architectural partner of both Gio Ponti and Lina Bo Bardi) for Arflex, Italy, 1952. The Carver chair is a rare variant of the campanula model with armrests which traditionally were placed at the head and foot of a large dining table, the original 'campanula' carver chairs are almost never found today so this is an extremely rare opportunity to obtain one This chair is an early examples identified by its artisan crafted solid wood frames and the 'Arflex' manufacturer's label which we managed to save from the original upholstery and have put back onto the new fabric Restoration details: This chair has had its upholstery completely restored in our upholstery shop , stripping it right back to its bare wood frame and then applying new high quality rubber seat and backrest support webbing by the original Italian manufacturer 'Pirelli', then new Pantera foam has been applied throughout replacing the old, dry and crumbling original foam and finally the chairs have been finished in a new elegant bright yellow top quality Mohair velvet fabric. The beautiful elegant tapered form brass legs have been sympathetically and lightly hand polished and may still exhibit some small signs of user wear commensurate with originality age and use. We did not want to machine polish the legs as it can take away at lot of the original vintage appeal. Carlo Pagani worked in the offices of Gio Ponti and collaborated and partnered Gio Ponti on several important projects which were documented in the Italian design journals of the period such as the August 1940 issue of Domus. In 1940, see scan attached in the photo section, Carlo Pagani started up his own architectural practice "Studio Bo and Pagani" in Via Gesu , Milan in partnership with modernist icon Lina Bo Bardi . In 1943 Pagani and Linda Bo became joint deputy editors of the famous Domus and Quaderni di Domus design periodicals until the magazines suspension in January 1945. In 1945 Domus commissioned Carlo Pagani and Lina Bo with photographer Federico Patellani to document and evaluate the situation of the destroyed country. Lina Bo, Pagani and Bruno Zevi then established the weekly magazine A – Attualità, Architettura, Abitazione, Literature illustratng the 'campanula' chair:- 'ARFLEX 51-81', page 16, Daniele Baroni, A Lucini e C, Milan, 1981 Original 'Arflex' manufacturers catalog dated 1957 illustrates a red example of the rare 'carver' variant of the 'campanula' dining chair with armrests . Please see photo of red chair in the photos attached. 'Domus', APRIL 1954, unpaginated Repertorio 1950-1980', page 71 Gramigna, 1985, (see black and white photo with 1952 date) ”New furniture” fig 126, page 42, Hatje, 1952.

Iconic Super Rare Original Edition 'Libro' Chair by Gruppo Dam, Busnelli, 1970
By Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano), G14, Busnelli
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Amazing and super rare original edition of the iconic ,radical 'libro' chair designed in 1970 by Gruppo DAM (Designer Associati Milano) in collaboration with the avant garde design group 'Gruppo G14' . Dimensions, please note the seating height, height and length of this chair is variable depending on how the seating leaves and enameled steel frame are arranged, only the width of the seat is fixed. The dimensions quoted are only one of the many possible and are for the seating elements as arranged in the last photo. The 'Libro'—meaning “book” in Italian—takes its form quite literally. Ten thin wedges are stacked on each other, hinged at the apex of an articulated enameled steel frame. What unfolds is an object with a childlike sense of discovery, offering an extraordinary range of seating positions depending on the flipping of each “page” along the spine. It demonstrates the re-envisioning of industrial design into a subversive lifestyle tool. And for a chair that cleanly falls into Italy’s postwar radical design movement of the late 1960s and early ’70s, it’s surprisingly functional—as practical as it is playfully outlandish. Undoubtedly, its originality, its simplicity, its ease of use, and its versatility make this sculpture-like armchair attractive to lovers of beauty and collectors interested in the conception and cultural process of design. Chairs from the original edition , finished in shiny vinyl, were originally produced in tiny numbers by 'Busnelli', as you can imagine at the time this design was considered too avant-garde and conceptual for the taste of the mass market. This example suffers from the same fate as per 95% of the original edition chairs in that the type of vinyl used proved to be particularly sensitive to UV light so over the passing years the surface layer of the vinyl upholstery has cracked significantly , some may see this as a flaw but it proves the originality of this museum piece and the chances of today finding an original edition chair without this vinyl surface cracking are effectively and unfortunately next to none. Today these extremely rare and early iconic examples of italian radical...
