About the Item

Joe Colombo ‘Elda’ Lounge Chair, Black Leather and White Fibreglass Shell, Produced by Comfort, Italy. 93cm high, 95cm wide, 98cm deep. The Elda Chair was designed by Joe Colombo in 1965 and named after his wife. He conceived the idea of making a chair frame from fibreglass after visiting a boatyard. At the height of the space race and the rise of Pop Art, the designer was inspired to create pieces using new materials and futuristic styles. The chair was produced by Comfort, Italy, during the 1960s in a range of colour variations. The Elda Chair has become an icon of 1960s design, and features in several films including The Spy Who Loved Me and The Hunger Games. The age of the leather and fibreglass shell are consistent with 1960s manufacture. The shell is in very good condition and the leather upholstery is in good aged condition, commensurate with date and use.
