About the Item

Introducing a truly extraordinary bentwood lounge chair designed by the influential Kipp Stewart for Drexel's lauded Declaration Line. Crafted in the late 1960s this Plycraft-styled molded bentwood chair features incredible black walnut woodgrains and audacious curves and shaping throughout. The ostrich leather upholstery adds subtle luxury and perfectly offsets the variegated woodgrains of the "shell". Though the base is not original, it has been expertly fabricated to fit this chair and allows it to swivel 360 degrees as well as recline and a second lever allows the chair to adjust it's height from a minimum overall height of 45" to and maximum height of 49" making this lounger as versatile as it is comfortable. Kipp Stewart, who recently passed in 2022, is an American Icon who's work as a furniture designer, artist and architect has been widely respected and venerated throughout the US and abroad. After working with the renowned industrial designers Charles and Bernice “Ray” Eames, Stewart went on to design furniture of a mid-century modern aesthetic for Drexel Heritage out of North Carolina, Directional Furniture through the Modernage Company in New York, and Summit Furniture of Monterey. The Drexel Furniture Co. began over a hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair. In the decades since, their product range has evolved into an assortment of timeless designs, drawn from significant periods and places, and from the talents of some of the world's most respected designers such as the aforementioned Kipp Stewart. Drexel is still producing pieces to this day with much reverence given to their craftsmanship and use of natural materials. Both incredibly rare and comfortable, stylish and versatile this truly one-of-a-kind lounge chair is unlike any we've ever come across. Perfect for collectors and designers alike searching for a unique bentwood chair that is as functional as it is visually captivating this piece can blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Contemporary to Industrial and everything in between. With literally nothing else out there like, when it's gone - it's gone forever. Make it yours today. ---Dimensions--- Width: 34.5 in / 87.63 cm Depth: 38 in / 96.52 cm Height: 49 in / 124.46 cm Seat Height: 19 in / 48.26 cm Arm Height: 26.5 in / 67.31 cm This extraordinary bentwood chair has recently undergone a partial restoration process. The molded plywood frame, veneered in walnut, has been sanded and re-finished but some signs of wear remain such as scratches (too deep to be sanded out entirely), veneer repairs, gouges, and a crack repair (all of which can be seen in both the detail photos and video provided). With that said the wood is in overall very good condition and the variegated woodgrains of the walnut veneer are absolutely arresting in natural light. The original ostrich leather does show some wear along the edges of the armrests (which can be seen in the detail photos and video provided). With that said there are no stains, rips or odors present whatsoever. The steel base, though not original, is in very good condition with no rust present and the newly fabricated base allows the chair to adjust to a maximum overall height of 49" with a maximum seat height of 23" and adjusts down to a minimum overall height of 45" and a minimum seat height of 18". The chair swivels 360 degrees with ease and a second, custom-made lever allows the chair to recline to a comfortable, relaxed position. This incredible chair is the very epitome of comfort, is structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to it's recent restoration process. Please view all photos and video for details on this one-of-a-kind lounger's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
