Afra & Tobia Scarpa “Soriana” Sofa for Cassina, Bouclé, 1969

About the Item

Afra & Tobia Scarpa “Soriana” Sofa for Cassina, Bouclé Wool, 1969 The lustrous original chromed metal structure embraces the soft and voluptuous alpaca boucle' volumes in this Mid-Century Italian Design masterpiece. The sofa has been re-upholstered to pristine conditions with a soft alpaca boucle fabric that accentuates the curvaceous presence of the Soriana model. The "Soriana" sofa that portrays the iconic styles of the 70s was the perfect piece to lay down on and having a relaxing a moment. It is curious to learn that the piece in-fact was ideated in the late 1960s by the Scarpa duo. The simplicity of the forms that are softly brought together by the base structure in chromed metal gives a strong emphasis to the upholstery of the couch. This helps put a spotlight on the soft, comfy appeal of the Soriana while simultaneously celebrating the genius of the concept. Due to the ingenuity of this project it was no surprise that the Soriana collection was awarded the Compasso D'oro award to celebrate its creation in the year 1970. The Scarpa couple embarked upon their design journey from the 50s and went on to create prized furniture collections for some of the most revered Italian design companies of the time including B&B Italia, Cassina, and many more. Their iconic forms are marked with a focus on rich curves and use of noble materials that earned their creations a place in design history. Their pieces are exhibited in many museums worldwide, collections the MoMa in New York and the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
