About the Item

A rare and exquisite example of George Katsutoshi Nakashima’s deep reverence for natural materials and bespoke craftsmanship, this “Free Edge” cabinet was specially commissioned in 1955 for Mr. and Mrs. David Wepman of York, Pennsylvania. The reverse bears the handwritten name of the original clients, a quiet testament to its intimate provenance and the personal nature of Nakashima’s work. George Nakashima (1905–1990) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century American design. As an architect, woodworker, and philosopher, Nakashima’s work transcended function - he believed in a spiritual connection between the craftsman and the material. Influenced by his Japanese heritage and experiences during World War II, Nakashima developed a design philosophy rooted in wabi-sabi: the beauty of imperfection, simplicity, and nature. This cabinet, crafted from solid cherrywood with sliding doors in woven pandanus, exemplifies Nakashima’s ability to honor the raw character of wood while executing it with precision and purpose. The free-edge top, left intentionally organic, follows the natural contours of the tree - a hallmark of Nakashima’s belief that each slab of wood carries its own story and spirit. Balanced in form and rich in detail, the cabinet features thoughtful proportions, warm grain, and refined joinery. Made in Nakashima’s legendary studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania, it stands not just as a piece of furniture, but as a deeply considered object of art and philosophy.
