George Nakashima 'Minguren II' Coffee Table in Oak Burl and Walnut
By George Nakashima Studio, George Nakashima
Located in Waalwijk, NL
George Nakashima, 'Minguren II' coffee table, English oak burl, oak, American black walnut, United States, 1980
American woodworker and designer George Nakashima proves with this quintessential table that he is a true master of his craft. The impressive coffee table, created custom for a private client in 1980, is designed to fully showcase the individual characteristics of the slab burl on top. The organic, free flowing edges of the wood contribute to a dynamic and natural appearance of the design. This free-form character of the top contrasts beautifully with the stark simplicity of the base, a typical trade of Nakashima. The asymmetrical composition contributes to the strength of the design and the high-visual quality. Besides their functional property, the exposed dovetail joints have a strong decorative character.
The table is signed and dated to underside: ‘George Nakashima March 1980’.
George Nakashima (1905-1990) was a well-known woodworker, architect and furniture designer from Japanese descendants. He was born in Spokane, Washington and enrolled in the University of Washington program in architecture. After his graduation in 1931, he decided to live his life as a bohemian in France. Afterwards, he spent some time in North Africa and eventually settled in Japan for some time. There, he started working for Antonin Raymond...

George Nakashima Triple Chest of Drawers in American Black Walnut & Laurel
By George Nakashima Studio, George Nakashima
Located in Waalwijk, NL
George Nakashima, triple chest of drawers or sideboard, American black walnut, Indian laurel, United States, 1964
With regard to its essential form, material use, and woodwork, this chest of drawers is a testimony to George Nakashima's expert craftsmanship and distinctive methodology. This large cabinet was specially designed for a private client in 1964. The unit revolves around a linear and strict layout with sharp lines and angular shapes dominating the scenery. This is contrasted by the organic, free flowing edges of the wooden slab on top executed in Indian laurel. The interior consists of nine regular drawers and three smaller drawers. A subtle but defining detail of this cabinet are the recessed handles that, as it were, merge into the body, maintaining a sleek and minimalist front. The base is comprised of two horizontal slats inserted perpendicularly into the frames. Nakashima succeeded in creating a durable piece of furniture with a timeless aesthetic and impeccable quality made possible by his close relationship with nature.

Located in Waalwijk, NL
George Nakashima, sliding-door wall-mounted cabinet, American black walnut, pandanus cloth, United States, 1963
With regard to its essential form, material use, and woodwork, this sliding-door wall-mounted cabinet is a testimony to George Nakashima's expert craftsmanship and distinctive methodology. This sideboard was specially designed for a private client in 1963. The unit revolves around a linear and strict layout with sharp lines and angular shapes dominating the scenery. This is contrasted by the organic, free flowing edges of the wooden slab on top. Behind the two sliding doors, the interior houses a spacious compartment and one shelf. The vertically grilled sliding doors are backed with pandanus cloth, made from a Southeast Asian Palm. Besides their functional property, the exposed dovetail joints have a strong decorative character, a constructive feature that is observable in these types of cabinets and benches by Nakashima. Nakashima succeeded in creating a durable piece of furniture with a timeless aesthetic and impeccable quality made possible by his close relationship with nature.

George Nakashima Settee with American Bison Hide Cushions
By George Nakashima Studio
Located in SAINT LOUIS, MO
Nakashima's settee is a design lover's dream. Simple wood craftmanship at its finest. The cushions are custom and crafted of thick and soft bison hide. Each is generously filled with feathers for a most comfortable seat. We love how the chocolate brown bison hide complements the American cherry wood. This two-seat settee is incredibly handsome and destined for an equally beautiful room.

Santee Sideboard Cabinet in Walnut
By Greg Mitchell
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The namesake of this piece is an alley one block from our Los Angeles studio, known for its bazaar-like display of stalls hawking clothes and textiles at wholesale prices. The scene is reminiscent of markets in Central America and, walking through it during breaks from the shop, one feels instantly transported out of the US. It's a hectic environment, however, and the Santee Sideboard is a meditation on minimalism in answer to the raucous consumerism taking place below.
We take great care in selecting the sustainably harvested lumber for every piece. Each panel of the cabinet, once milled and joined, is polished with well tuned hand planes...
