About the Item

The Combi Center is a celebrated example of Italian industrial design, born in 1963 from the revolutionary vision of Joe Colombo, one of the absolute protagonists of design in the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his surprising and futuristic solutions, Colombo conceived this project as a modular system capable of reinterpreting the concept of domestic space, making it flexible, functional and dynamic. Resumed in production in 1997 by the historic Bernini company, the Combi Center keeps the conceptual strength of the original intact, combining technical innovation with quality craftsmanship. Designed as an independent, mobile module (thanks to the presence of casters at the base), the Combi Center consists of stacked cylindrical volumes, each with a specific function: a bar element with sliding doors, a drawer module, a compartment with vertical shelving for books, magazines or records, and a compartment with doors for dishes and objects. This stackable and modular structure allows for highly adaptable use to suit living spaces and needs, making it a piece of furniture that is still remarkably relevant today. Aesthetically, the Combi Center stood out for its bold character: Colombo combined rosewood with curved aluminum in a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity, reflecting his personal vision of design as a tool for transforming living. This specimen is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Bernini, guaranteeing its originality and historical value. Favata, Joe Colombo and Italian Design of the Sixties, Cambridge 1988, p. 66 - Joe Colombo. Inventing the Future, Vitra Desing Museum, Weil am Rhein 2005, p. 150./ Designers: Joe Colombo (1930-1971) was one of the most influential and visionary Italian designers of the postwar period. His career, although tragically cut short at only 41 years of age, left a deep imprint on the international design scene. Colombo is known for his ability to envision the future of living, anticipating concepts as central today as modularity, multifunctionality and transformability of spaces. Trained as a painter and architect, Colombo brought an extraordinary experimental charge to industrial design. His designs-from compact living systems to multifunctional furniture-were often conceived as "machines for living," true home ecosystems in which everything is designed to fit the modern, dynamic and ever-changing lifestyle. Throughout his career, he collaborated with leading Italian design companies, including Kartell, Oluce, Zanotta, and, in particular, the historic Bernini, with whom he developed projects that combined industrial precision with handcrafted refinement. The collaboration with Bernini gave rise to innovative pieces that are still relevant today, such as the famous Combi Center: a modular system designed to organize and separate living space efficiently and flexibly, which best expresses Colombo's design philosophy. His work is held in major international museum collections, including MoMA in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Even today, Joe Colombo is recognized as one of the absolute masters of twentieth-century design, capable of transforming spaces and the way we experience them.
