Exquisitely hand-crafted in Paris in the mid-18th century, exceptionally executed in opulent and luxurious period King Louis 15th taste, featuring a curvacious serpentine-front bombe-form solid wood case fitted with two drawers, adorned with finely chased, chiseled and gilded bronze doré mounts, including rare and most distinctive sculptural fiolated scroll Rocaille handles, flanking ornate keyhole escutcheons with original key included. In absolutely stunning rare and exotic precious tulipwood and kingwood veneer work with striking warm rich highly figured grain patterns, elegant floral marquetry inlays and fascinating early sunburst panels. Topped with the original serpentine shaped Brèche de Médous marble-top with stepped molded edge. The Breccia de Médous is extracted in the towns of Médous and Asté, near Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées. This dramatic breccia is composed of angular elements of contrasting colors ranging from black to yellow to gray creating a bold but subdued visual display. Typical wear commensurate with age, use, handling and exposure, including minor nicks to edge, age splits scattered throughout body, expected antique character and charm. Marble top is in great shape. Accompanied by two working keys. Overall outstanding presence, delivered cleaned, waxed, with hand rubbed polished patina, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment! - INTERESTING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This elegant commode typifies the fashion for furniture mounted with exotic and rare woods, exquisite marquetry-work, and decadent Rococo bronzes. Andre Antoine Lardin, also known as N.B. Lardin was born in 1724 and died on 10 August 1790. He held his master's title from 1 July 1750 and was particularly respected for the exceptional quality of his veneering / marquetry. A well known and regarded maître ébéniste, Lardin’s career is somewhat thinly documented, most likely due to the upheaval and record destruction during the Revolution, notably when the guilds in Paris and elsewhere were abolished in 1791. Lardin worked for various marchand-mercier (furniture dealers) and probably also for a private clientele. He ran his workshop first in the Rue de Charenton and from 1770 in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. His two sons, André Antoine II and Louis François, worked with him for some time and the second-named became his successor in the Rue Saint-Nicolas. Lardin is known to have worked for the marchands André-François Carré, this superb commode having almost most certainly been commissioned through the intervention of one of these fashionable dealers. The marchand-mercier André-François Carré, is recorded rue Froidmanteau, "Magasin de glaces, porcelaine ébénisterie et curiosités pour les cabinets d'histoire naturelle." Carré also worked with two vernisseurs (vernis Martin): Porchon and Prévost. All of Lardin's furniture is classic in form and decor, well crafted and mostly veneered in rosewoods or violet wood. Lardin worked in the taste of the time with geometric patterns, cartouche fields and simulated fluting. Furniture with elaborate inlays such as birds, trophies, urns, landscapes, or flowers and sunburts such as this stunning example appear more rarely. The stamp JME stands for Jures Menuisiers Ebeniste and notes the guild affiliation of the master. The Corporation des Menuisiers-Ébénistes was a French craft guild which was concerned with the profession of woodworking. Some JME stamps are worn down from the marble slab over the years and no longer apparent, but in this case lacking the JME stamp is likely indicative of work made prior to reaching maître ébéniste (master cabinetmaker), denoting an early and exceedingly scarce example. This elegant antique fruitwood "Armoire Provencale," is truly exceptional. Crafted in France, circa 1760, this tall cabinet stands on escargot feet decorated with acanthus leaves at the shoulder, over a scalloped and pierced apron embellished with a weaved floral basket flanked with laurel and wheat leaf motifs. The bonnet top features exquisite carvings including a neoclassical urn surrounded with a laurel crown floral basket at the pediment. Both doors are decorated with hand carved floral and branch motifs, and are decorated. Rare pair of Louis XV style gilt-bronze mounted curved shape vitrines attributed to J.E Zwiener. Glazed on all sides, they open with two doors framed by gilded and chiseled Rocaille style foliated bronze mounts. Resting on four cabriole legs ending with lion’s paws, the whole is covered by a « brèche de Benou » marble top. This model was probably designed by L. Messagé. Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener was born in Germany in 1849. In 1880 he sets up his extensive workshops in rue de la Roquette in Paris where he creates many original pieces of furniture. He imitated practically every style, ranging from ‘’Boulle’’ to Louis XVI and including extraordinary personal interpretations of the Louis XV ‘’exuberant’’ style. He participated in the 1889 Universal Exhibition, held in Paris, and was awarded the gold medal for his remarkable copy of that most famous piece of furniture, Louis XV’s desk. The catalogue of the exhibition included a wonderful elegy qualifying the work as perfect : « No criticism what-so-ever could be made ». As that other famous cabinet-maker François Linke, Zwiener had most of his bronzes modelled by Léon Messagé whose work was considered as being of the best possible quality. Léon Messagé is a renowned designer and sculptor who integrated in his ornaments related to the Rocaille asymmetry, new lines and shapes announcing the “Art Nouveau” style. But even though, Messagé found inspiration with these 18th century artists, such as Nicolas Pineau or J. A. Meissonier, he didn’t simply copy their work and showed great originality, even extravagance, with some designs contained in "Cahier des dessins et croquis style Louis XV". He realized numerous sketches on grey paper before the execution of a reduced or life sized model of his ornaments, made of wax or terra-cotta. A very fine French 19th century Louis XV style ormolu mounted plum pudding mahogany veneer, mahogany and Vernis Martin decorated vitrine à Deux Corps, probably by François Linke (1855-1946). The lower structure fitted with finely chased gilt-bronze mounts with female masks, musical instruments, floral drapes, bows and acanthus, centred with a frieze drawer and a cupboard door with three painted panels. The centre front painted panel with a Romantic courting park setting scene amongst sheep and a sculpture fountain of Putti; the side panels both with parks scenes of a resting lion sculpture and fountain flanked by grassing sheep. The lower cabinet interior with three drawers, the upper vitrine case with two glass shelves, a bowed beveled front door and sides, crowned with a fine gilt-bronze wreath mount with ribbons, all raised on four cabriolet legs with cast lion paw mounts. Unsigned, Paris, circa 1890-1900. The style of this cabinet is closely related to those produced in the Paris furniture making trade in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in the 1880s and as such, without a signature or identifying mark, is unattributable. However, there are similarities with the firm Raoux et Brunet, some of whose mounts were designed by Léon Messagé and later used by François Linke. Indeed many of the mounts on this cabinet, whilst not exclusive to him, are very similar to the work produced in his early years in Paris in the 1880s. At this time Linke was making furniture to order...

This elegant, antique fruit wood sideboard was carved in Southern France, circa 1880. The Classic sideboard exemplifies the Louis XV style with a heavy presence, dramatic lines and intricate floral and foliage carvings throughout. The cabinet stands on small cabriole legs ending with escargot feet, over a scalloped apron heavily decorated with a center urn filled with floral and leaf motifs.
