Gae Aulenti 'Jumbo' coffee table in Carrara marble by Knoll (labeled), 1965

About the Item

Gae Aulenti was a prolific Italian architect and furniture designer best known for transforming Paris’ Gare d’Orsay railway station into the Musée d’Orsay. Inspired by Le Corbusier, Aulenti sought to stand out against the dominant Modernist aesthetic and encouraged individual expression in her designs of lamps, coffee tables, chairs, and buildings. Born on December 4, 1927 in Palazzolo dello Stella, Italy, Aulenti was one of two women in her graduating class of 20 to earn a degree in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1954. “My advice to whoever asks me how to make a home is to not have anything, just a few shelves for books, some pillows to sit on,” Aulenti has said, ”And then, to take a stand against the ephemeral, against passing trends... and to return to lasting values.” She spent much of her life defying the modern and fashionable, which earned her the attention of Fiat and Milan’s major design houses. Aulenti won the Grand International Prize for Arrivo al Mare (Arrival at Sea) in the 1964 Milan Triennial in the Italian Pavillion, and later served on the board for the Triennial. The designer died on October 31, 2012 in Milan, Italy. Her works are in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others, and her avant-garde legacy lives on in her restorations and transformations of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.

Large abstract ‘Verticali’ sculpture in by Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972
Located in Sittard, LI
Large abstract 'Verticali' sculpture by Italian artist Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972. This sculpture is made out of polished stainless steel and created for the German headquarters of Johnson & Johnson in Düsseldorf, this is a unique piece. All in a good original condition with wear and patina consistent with its age. The sculpture stands 285cm (112.2 inch) tall, is 101cm (39.7inch) wide on both side and rests on a 116cm (45.6inch) round base. The Verticali sculptures were conceived for the outdoors, anchored to the earth, often in correspondence with the surrounding architecture. They are stainless steel sculptures, larger than life, built by using segments of cylinders and spheres welded together in symmetrical or asymmetrical relationships. Because of their highly polished, reflective metal surfaces, these sculptures reflect the surrounding environment and architecture and are in a constant process of change Roberto Cordone (born 11 April 1941 in Vallecrosia, Liguria) is an Italian artist and sculptor. Gae Aulenti for Knoll 'Jumbo' Carrara Marble Coffee Table, Italy, circa 1964
By Knoll, Gae Aulenti
Located in New York, NY
The 'Jumbo' Carrara marble coffee table by the famed female Italian architect Gae Aulenti, (Italy, 1927-2012) made for Knoll. Literature: Gramigna, Giuliana. Repertorio Dell'Arredo Domestico 1950-2000 Allemandi: Torino, 2003, p. 111. Size: 14 1/2" high x 44 3/4" square just table top x 67" square total The iconic design constitutes a spectacular and grand square slab of Carrara marble with a total of six pieces including the sculpted and canted corner legs; It is one of the first tables where marble, a material removed for years from the world of furniture, makes its reappearance where the material in itself has a striking and expressive aesthetic and not used as a decorative element but used constructively according to its technological characteristics. One of Aulenti's most significant designs, an impressive and grand, yet minimalist and bold addition to any home interior. Gae Aulenti (born December 4, 1927, Palazzolo dello Stella, Italy–died December 31, 2012, Milan, Italy). Gae (or Gai) Aulenti was a prominent postwar Italian designer and architect who lent her fluid approach to media and material to some of the most important architectural and interior designs of the late 20th century. Aulenti attended Politecnico di Milano in the mid 1950's and established her design practice in the same city shortly after graduation. She rose to prominence while serving as the art director for Casabella, a leading avant-garde architectural journal of the era. It was during these early years that Aulenti’s unique design philosophy emerged, one that centered on the ultimate freedom of the designer from the limitations of practice to a singular medium. Rather than selecting one style and imposing it upon a space, Gae Aulenti believed instead that the space and its inhabitants should inform the design around them. What resulted was a body of work that spanned all realms. From smaller furnishings...
