Hirsch applies the waxy mix with a brush onto redwood plywood backed structures with two-inch wood strips all around and used various torches to layer, flux, bubble and blend. "Waxy and very tactile, they are probably the work Mark Rothko would have done had he spent most of his life in clay. Hirsch’s paintings have the nuance, subtle texture, and color shifts that become evident in blown-up photographs of his ceramic objects as well as a similar presence." Richard Hirsch brief bio:
In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence.
In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades.
Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Michelle Hénault is a Conceptual Fine Artist, born in Lachute, Quebec, living and working in Montreal since 1991. She completed a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts at UQAM in 1998. After exploring sculpture and photography, she dedicated herself to oil painting. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows over the last fifteen years. In 2010, she moved to Scotland with her partner for two years. Since returning to Montreal, she has devoted her time to oil painting and her work has flourished. Inspired by her many travels, her work explores landscapes as a contemplative territory. The desire to revisit past voyages through painting and to recapture the sentiments she experienced in various places was her primary motivation for producing these landscapes. "For the last fifteen years I have explored the reconstruction of landscapes in my painting. My practice is concerned with our relation to land as the memory of place. A land can be occupied, shared, transformed and dreamed, idealized. The land, as homeland or an idyllic land to travel to, where the memory is presupposed. Through my art, I explore that memory of travel, the journeys I made and the ones I dreamed. When contemplating a landscape and experiencing the change of light or atmosphere we realize the passage of time. As explorers from bygone eras, seeking unknown lands, my work proposes a return to the essential…that the French call ‘le bapteme de la solitude’. It is a unique sensation, and it has nothing to do with loneliness, for loneliness presupposes memory. Here, in this wholly mineral landscape lighted by stars like flares, even memory disappears; nothing is left but your own breathing and the sound of your heat beating. It was the generosity of Vera and her husband Albert that enabled the founding of the Vera List Art Project at Lincoln Center in 1962, MIT's List Arts Center in 1982, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in 1992, among others. Sturtevant was born in Lakewood, Ohio (USA) and spent the first years of her artistic life working in New York - where in 1956, she began to manually reproduce paintings and objects created by her contemporaries with results that cannot immediately be identified from an original.
Sturtevant intentionally turns the concept of originality on its head... All of her works are copies of the works of other artists; none is an original. She initially focused on works by such American artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol. In the late 1960s, she concentrated on replicating works by Joseph Beuys and Duchamp. Since the early 1980s, she has focused on the next generation of artists, including Robert Gober, Anselm Kiefer, Paul McCarthy, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
She masters painting, sculpture, photography and film in order to produce a full range of copies of her chosen artist's work. In most cases, her decision to start copying an artist happened before those artists achieved broader recognition. Nearly all of the artists she chose to copy are today considered iconic for their time or style. This has given rise to discussions amongst art critics on how it has been possible for Sturtevant to identify these now famous artists at such an early stage.
