Mid-18th Century Indian Court Painting of Krishna and Radha, Gouache with Gold
Located in Middleburg, VA
A superbly detailed mid-18th-century Indian miniature court painting, executed in gouache heightened with gold on handmade paper. Originating from Rajasthan circa 1760, this exquisite artwork captures a serene palace scene featuring the Hindu deity Krishna with Radha and accompanying Gopis in a lush, architectural setting. The composition is rich in symbolism, narrative depth, and emotional subtlety, hallmarks of classical Rajput painting. The figures are adorned with traditional garments, rendered in delicate pastel tones with intricate patterns and gilt accents. The architectural elements, marble pavilions, domes, carved screens, and floral gardens, are meticulously executed, offering a vivid impression of royal leisure and divine romance. Set against a tree-lined courtyard with peacocks and floral motifs, the visual rhythm is both vibrant and harmonious. The painting is professionally mounted in a deep tan linen mat and presented in an elegant gold-gilt frame with black detailing, complementing the composition's refined warmth and historic gravitas. A rare and captivating example of classical Indian court painting...

C. 1625 After Antoine de Pluvinel, "Henry IV, Mounted", Hand Colored Engraving
Located in Morristown, NJ
Early 17th century, French hand colored equestrian engraving. After Antoine de Pluvinel (French, 1552-1620), "Henry IV, Mounted", figure 42 from "L'Instruction du Roy en l'Exercice de Monter a Cheval", c. 1625, matted and framed under UF-3 plexiglass (blocks approx. 97% of UV) , gallery label verso. Figures from this publication have sold at Christie's. Those were not hand colored. A highly detailed engraving with the French King Henry 1V the central figure. Mounted on horseback, Le Roy (the King) is watched by no less than 10 courtiers some of whom are mounted on horseback, all of which are named in the engraving. Antoine de Pluvinel (1552, Crest, Dauphine - 24 August 1620) was the first of the French riding masters, and has had great influence on modern dressage. He wrote L’Instruction du Roy en L'exercice de Monter à Cheval ("instruction of the King in the art of riding"), was tutor to King Louis XIII, and is credited with the invention of using two pillars, as well as using shoulder-in to increase suppleness. In 1594, Pluvinel founded the "Academie d'Equitation" near what is now Place des Pyramides. There, the French nobility was trained not only in horsemanship, but also in all the accomplishments (dancing, fashionable dressing, etc.) It can be said that Pluvinel's influence on the aristocracy lasted from the late 16th century to the 17th century. Richelieu, the future Prime Minister of King Louis XIII attended the Academie; so did William, Duke of Cavendish. Pluvinel's book was published posthumously by the Flemish engraver Crispijn van de Passe II and the royal valet de chambre...

Pair of Miniatures, Frans van de Casteele 'Kasteels' aka Francesco da Castello
By Francesco da Castello
Located in Madrid, ES
Frans van de Casteele (Kasteels) called Francesco da Castello (Brussels, ca. 1541 - Rome, 1621) Adoration of the shepherds Crowning with thorns First decade of the 17th century. Tempera and gold on parchment, 290 x 240 mm (with frame). Original wooden frame with trimmed silver foil applications; in the corners, medallions with the four evangelists. The two refined miniatures of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Crowning with Thorns are works of the artist's full maturity, dating from the first decade of the 17th century, characterized by formal simplification and pure colors in the invoice of the garments that stand out from the eburoral incarnations of the characters. Among the numerous motifs comparable to those of other miniatures by Francesco da Castello, the small medallions with the Evangelists barely outlined on a golden background, closely recall the miniatures, of reduced dimensions, inserted in the compartments of the frame of the altar with the Mysteries del Rosario, as well as those of another box with compartments with the Tree of Jesse...
