A wonderfully glazed, impeccably made Chawan tea bowl by famed Japanese master potter the 13th Kichizaemon Raku, Seinyu (1887-1944) who was the eldest son of Konyu - the 12th Kichizaemon of the Raku family line of potters - known as the most noted and celebrated tradition of pottery within the world of Japanese tea. Kichizaemon Raku was the 13th master to carry on the family's esteemed name and tradition. The bowl features shifting textures and deep, rich colours which radiate in the light.
The term "Raku" was derived from the site where clay was dug in Kyoto in the late 16th century. The Kanji character for Raku translates to "enjoyment" or "fun/delightful" For 15 generations it has been the title and seal used by a lineage of potters whose work formed the central tradition in Japan. This lineage believes that 'Raku' refers to the potters who use the technique, not the technique itself. In the 16th century, the first of these potters, Chojiro is said to have come under the patronage of the Japanese tea master, Sen-No-Rikyu. According to legend, in 1598 a few years after Chojiro's death, ruler, Hideyoshi Toyotomi bestowed upon his adopted son, Jokei, a golden seal with the written symbol "Raku." Both the name and the ceramic style have been passed down through the family to the present ever since. The name and the style of ware have become influential in both Japanese culture and literature. Raku ware marked an important point in the historical development of Japanese ceramics, as it was the first ware to use a seal mark and the first to focus on close collaboration between potter and patron. Would be an amazing addition to any Mid-Century Modern pottery collection or personal collectors of her work or a fabulous stand-alone accent piece in about any setting. One of the best Beatrice Wood's luster glaze vases we have come across in quite a while.
Know famously in the art world as "The Mama of Dada", Wood lived a long (1893-1998) and very fruitful, creative life and is considered by many experts and collectors alike to have been a centerpiece in the modern ceramic art movement of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. At one point in her career, Wood studied with master potters Otto and Gertrud Natzler and later become famed in her own right for her distinct luster-glazing techniques. In 1994, the Smithsonian Institution named Wood an "Esteemed American Artist".

For your consideration is a mystery Water Wheel Industrial Ball Bearing Clock. It comes with an 8 day movement and keeps very good time!! This water wheel industrial clock has a big paddle wheel on the right side which hold a a set of small steel ball bearings. The weight of these balls is propelling the clock. Please note the time shows a thin glass dial with Roman numerals. Every 60 seconds, a small ball drops down from the water wheel onto the track where the steel ball rolls to the left side. The bucket catches the ball and move it up one by one. Every 60 seconds, a steel ball drops from the left bucket on the channel to the waterwheel. Then the bucket drops down and go around to catch another ball bearing. The loops goes on as the clock keeps on running. The buckets chain is made of brass and nicely done. The power is received from an 8 day fusee movement inside the solid hardwood base, red ash. And the clock has a pendulum on the back to regulate the timing. The whole animation of this clock is just like a waterwheel except it's ball bearing "flowing" through channels and there is a clock on the big water wheel. The clock is protected by a glass dome. It measure 17-3/4" tall, 17-3/4" wide, and 8-3/4" deep including the glass dome. I'm sure this clock will upscale any clock store...
