Anna in My Studio - Portrait of a Woman, Original Oil Painting on Panel, Framed
Located in Chicago, IL
A casual pose, Anna gazes out toward the viewer, inviting them in for a closer look. Artist Zack Zdrale takes a traditional approach to his work although his subjects and compositions place his work in the present. His paintings are imbued with a stillness and silence for the viewer to infuse meaning. The figure, with her piercing blue eyes, takes a traditional position yet brings a casualness to the piece by her dress and the unfinished works hanging in the background. It captures an intimate moment of solitude. This artwork is framed. The painting is framed in a simple black frame with a small antiqued...

Cafe No'Se
By Andrew LeMay Cox
Located in Chicago, IL
Andrew LeMay Cox Ink Painting Statement Within these works the exploration of visual storytelling and construction propose challenging questions to the traditions of academic painting. Two components that influence these painting practices are process and narrative. The function of materiality within these works attempts to question traditional methods of paint on canvas. They are constructed using ink that is baked at high temperatures and is assembled by painting on skins. The skins hang loosely from the stretcher and add sculptural properties to 2-dimensional surfaces. The other component is to create an aesthetic narrative that allows the viewer to escape their reality and get lost in themes outside civilizations normality’s. These characters occupy a utopian landscape outside the realms of race, religion, or politics. They ignore social or economic concerns. They are ageless and serendipitous. They sing, dance and make love without cause, limitation or destination. Moonrise, Kauai - Oceanfront Moonlight Through Cloudy Sky, Oil on Panel, Framed
By Jeff Aeling

This painting of moonlight shining through clouds at night evokes the peaceful beauty and mystery of a moment at the seaside. Untitled RAG-1
By Rick Garcia
Located in Chicago, IL
Acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 inches Rick Garcia's RAG13 Collection is inspired by the observation that there has been a significant and permanent change in our public and private lives. These artworks use symbolism to illustrate how the ubiquitous presence of suspicion and the act of being a suspect have both become a way of life. Adults and children are shown as generic solid shapes with parts missing to indicate loss of identity and the relinquishing of certain rights. The watchful eye of authority is always present as a figure dressed in black with three white stripes. All of the figures have a red dot to symbolize the human heart; how we are all connected. This red dot also represents being a target or a person of interest. Overall, this latest series creates a surreal flow of images, colors, and shapes blending into a beautiful and poignant work of art. About the Artist: "Photography has been part of my creativity throughout my life and more recently has become influential in my abstract work on canvas. The magical shapes of water gracefully floating or scattering in mid-air reveals the true god-like essence of nature. I am fascinated studying these images of bright tiny mercury-like globes, silky trails, dancing droplets and crystal clear languid sheets. " Rick Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and very soon after, his parents relocated to Miami, Florida. He was always encouraged to follow his dream of pursuing and developing his talent in art. In later years he found a deep-rooted connection to surrealism, especially the work of Salvador Dali. Garcia had become obsessed with the unique images and amazing technique of the Spanish painter and he eventually traveled to Port Lligat, Spain to visit the home and surroundings of his mentor. After years of attending the Art Institute of Miami, where he refined his artistic vision in drawing and painting, he was soon earning an income from published illustrations. Garcia has enjoyed a rich and diverse career starting with the hit TV show "Miami Vice" commissioning him to create a mural on the side of a three story building, and used his paintings for interior shots. Apart from a growing number of private commissions, his distinctive images were commissioned by The United Nations Postal Administration in 1998 and 2003. His stamps brought awareness to the growing extinction of the rainforest and its inhabitants, and followed with the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization, bringing awareness to the vanishing supply of freshwater, where it earned him the prestige of the most beautiful stamp series of 2003. Garcia was chosen as an "Absolut Artist of the 90s" in the popular vodka ad campaign and with his second piece Absolut Electric, this further drew worldwide attention. 1998, 1999, and 2001 garnered him the distinction of official artist to The Grammy Awards where his creations influenced the look of the live broadcast and graced the covers of the official program book, CDs, posters, apparel, and other various items. His work included portraits of stars such as Destiny's Child, Ricky Martin, Coldplay, Santana, Celia Cruz, Black Eyed Peas, Imogen Heap and Kanye West. His life long passion of thoroughbred racing tapped him in 2008 to be the official artist of the 2008 Kentucky Derby Festival. Founder of Benihana, Rocky Aoki, gave Rick complete creative control to design a sushi restaurant on Miami Beach. Along with sculptor Bruce Hanners, they built and installed an 1800 sq. ft octopus designed by Rick to be the massive ceiling light...

Zum Schwarzen Ferkel - (The Black Piglet) Vibrant Scene of a Group in a Bar
By Benjamin Duke
Located in Chicago, IL
[From Ben Duke] The following is from Wikipedia, but I learned of this spot after getting into August Strindberg novels. "Zum Schwarzen Ferkel," translated as "The Black Piglet," was a historic tavern located at the corner of Unter den Linden and Neue Wilhelmstraße in Berlin. Notable for its cultural and historical significance, the tavern was a central meeting point for Nordic writers and artists in the 1890s. It was frequented by figures such as August Strindberg, Edvard Munch, and the Polish writer Stanisław Przybyszewski, among others. The tavern's original name was Gustav Türkes Weinhandlung und Probierstube, owned by Gustav Türke, and it was also known as "The Cloister." The name "Zum Schwarzen Ferkel" was coined by Strindberg, who thought an Armenian wine-sack hanging over the entrance resembled a black piglet. This quirky name was enthusiastically accepted by both the owner and the patrons. August Strindberg, a Swedish playwright and novelist, played a significant role in the tavern's history. After moving to Berlin in 1892, he became a regular at the tavern and a leading figure among the Nordic and German artistic community that gathered there. The tavern was not only a place for socializing but also a hub of intellectual and artistic exchange, with members engaging in vibrant discussions and forming significant relationships, both personal and professional. Edvard Munch, the Norwegian painter, also became a regular after his arrival in Berlin in 1892. The tavern saw its share of drama, including romantic entanglements and artistic disputes. One notable figure was Dagny Juel, a Norwegian music student who became involved with several members of the circle and was later tragically murdered in Tbilisi in 1901. The tavern's influence extended into the literary and artistic works of its patrons. For example, Adolf Paul wrote about his experiences and the people he met at the Ferkel in his book "Strindberg-Erinnerungen und -Briefe," published in 1914. Strindberg's novel "Klostret" ("The Cloister"), published posthumously in 1966, also drew from his experiences at the tavern. Unfortunately, the original building that housed Zum Schwarzen Ferkel was destroyed during the Second World War. Today, its legacy lives on through the stories and works of the artists and writers who once gathered there. Wikkipedia. Volcano - Erupting Volcano with Swirling Cloud of Ash, Framed Oil Painting
By Jeff Aeling
Located in Chicago, IL
Artist Jeff Aeling captures a volcano as it spews a giant column of lava and gas into the air creating a massive ash cloud. The artist's use of loose brush strokes and gentle dabs of paint evokes impressionist painting while the palette sets a tranquil scene for this landscape. The painting is framed in a heavy black wooden frame burnished to reveal reddish undertones measuring 16.5 x 14.5 x 1.5 inches. True North - Privilege, Surreal Landscape w/ Blue Sky, Scattered Clouds, & House
By Mark Bowers
Located in Chicago, IL
"True North - Privilege" is a dream-like view of a cloud filled sky yet nothing feels quite real. The ellipsed edges confirm the scene as an inner vision rather than a window on the world. The foreground gives a glimpse of a white structure but we must use our imagination to piece the scene together. The painting itself is painted on a handmade wooden panel with beautifully finished edges so no frame is needed. Mark Bowers True North - Privilege oil on panel 9h x 12w in 22.86h x 30.48w cm MJB011 TRUE NORTH PAINTINGS Unconscious systemic biases may guide our actions or direct us---similar to the human construct of “True North”, which holds to coordinate systems. The Earth’s “Magnetic North” moves over time according to polar shifts; flux and correction is enabled by polarity. In these paintings (Privilege, Orientation, Belief, Identity, Equity), I use compositional elements referencing nautical com- passes to suggest that society must navigate not within systems, but naturally through positive relationships and change. I hope that my art represents our present day - but also imparts a dreamful glimpse of hope and faith within. Explanation: A magnetic compass does not point toward the true North Pole of the Earth. Rather, it more closely points toward the North Magnetic Pole of the Earth. The North Magnetic Pole is currently located in northern Canada. It wanders in an elliptical path each day, and moves, on the average, more than forty meters northward each day. Evidence indicates that the North Magnetic Pole has wandered over much of the Earth's surface in the 4.5 billion years since the Earth formed. Mark Bowers- Artist Statement With the depiction of landscape playing such a central role in the history of North American art, it seemed to offer many of the critical possibilities I was looking for, and it felt more and more like something I have always known. Chinese Mythical Immortal Screen Painting, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Since the 12th century, people in China have used folding screens and doors to partition and decorate their homes - the vivid scenes backing the screens added life and color to a room. This 19th-century painting is delicately brushed of gouache and ink on fabric and was originally part of a set of eight backing a wooden screen in northern China. The figure depicted is one of the mythical Eight Immortals of Taoism. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, each of the Eight Immortals represents a different condition in life and together they impart a blessing of prosperity and longevity. Depicted here is immortal Lan Caihe, the patron saint of florists and gardeners. Standing atop a lotus leaf in open water, they hold a gardening hoe in one hand and a basket for flowers...

Contaminating the Innocent - Young Girl Swimming Surrounded by Plastic Waste
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
"Contaminating the Innocent" is a bold statement on our society today. Plastics are everywhere and what they are doing to the environment is devastating. What they are doing to the next generation is even more catastrophic. Bruno plays with this idea by bringing this angelic child to the forefront of the issues at hand. We are drawn in by her innocence yet taunted by her surroundings. Bruno Surdo Contaminating the Innocent oil on canvas 48h x 48w in 121.92h x 121.92w cm BRS072 Bruno A. Surdo b. Section 30 - Landscape Painting, Original Oil on Canvas
By Don Pollack
Located in Chicago, IL
Don Pollack BIOGRAPHY Don Pollack is a Painter and Adjunct Associate Professor of Visual Communication at theSchool of t he Art Institute of Chicago. His work investigates among other things, the relationship between personal mythologies and representation in painting and how it may simultaneously give reference to a narrative.Working in cross disciplines has influenced his perspectives as projects begin with an epic adventure. Conceptually proceeding from the premise that all vision is historic and constructed, Pollack’s research starts with the planning of a long distance trek,– such as a 3000 mile journey via bicycle following Lewis and Clark. His work has utilized maps, documents, photography, painting, and installation. This work was routed in a previous investigation into the role of museums in the process of forming collective memory. Don studied design at the University of Illinois and painting at the Ohio State University where he received his MFA.The state of Illinois has recognized his history based work with a special bicentennial edition of the ‘Order of Abraham Lincoln’ award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and has shown many solo shows in, Chicago, NewYork, Atlanta, and Canada. Don Pollack EDUCATION m.f.a. Ohio State University Columbus,Ohio b.f.a. Light Pillar - Atmospheric Optical Phenomenon, Framed Oil Painitng
By Jeff Aeling
Located in Chicago, IL
Light pillars, a captivating atmospheric optical phenomenon, have been observed during extremely cold weather conditions. These mesmerizing columns of light appear to beam directly upwards from unshielded lights, creating a spectacle that captures the imagination. While they may seem otherworldly, light pillars are actually a result of plate-shaped ice crystals suspended in the air close to the ground. Here, artist Jeff Aeling uses loose brush strokes and gentle dabs of paint evoke impressionist painting while the palette sets a tranquil scene for this singular light pillar. The painting is framed in a heavy black wooden frame burnished to reveal red undertones measuring 20.5h x 16.5h x 1.75d inches.
