Born in 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, Ira Barkoff’s paintings feature empty, Zen-like landscapes whose stillness reflects a location’s essence. Barkoff seeks to “portray a sense of vastness” and instill feelings of awe in his viewers, he says. Furthering his exploration of the abstract, Barkoff paints in his studio, rather than en plein air, fabricating landscapes from his visual and emotional memories. The Impressionist-turned-Expressionist painter is inspired by the atmospheric qualities of works by Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner and cites Gerhard Richter as a more contemporary influence. He recently transitioned from using a paintbrush to using a squeegee and palette knives for his work, as the latter allow for greater spontaneity and manipulation of color.
He says of his work: “Looking at a blank canvas can be both exciting and frightening at the same time. Most of the time exciting wins out and I plunge in. That is, I paint the landscape, which for me is what it’s all about. The landscape represents nature and contemplating nature is being in touch with God. You could cast me as a modern-day Luminist-Tonalist-Impressionist. Monet’s Water Lilies have been a big influence, along with the landscape painter Wolf Kahn.”
“The landscape is what I see before me or from my mind’s eye. When I paint a mountain or a tree, I’m not trying to capture the mountain or tree literally (that’s what a photograph does). I’m trying to express my inner spirit in the painting – to transcend the physical to reach the spiritual.”

Vibrant orange-red, bright cyan, yellow ochre, and a myriad of cool grays are consistent throughout the composition in this large format mixed media painting by artist Sarah Finucane. Oriented horizontally, the surface is split equally into four vertical panel-like sections. Thick swirls of paint, larger areas of scumbling, paint drips, and more linear elements come together in an abstract energy storm. As a combination of collaged paintings, the artist has allowed for her older works to be reborn in a new creation of its own.

This piece captures the feeling of a spontaneous road trip through the Southern California sunshine with your bestie, heading to Lake Elsinore when the poppies are in full bloom. The upbeat and perky vibe is conveyed through a mix of media, including Caran D'ache Neopastels, oil bars, graphite, and acrylic paint in shades of blue-green, yellow ochre, and warm and cool grays, punctuated with pops of black. It can be hung in any direction and serves as a bright and uplifting addition to any home or office. The creation of this piece was inspired by the artist's own unfinished paintings, which they felt stuck on. Instead of getting frustrated, they took a chance and cut out the parts they liked best, using their vintage Singer sewing machine...

Using symmetry as a basis, Drakopoulos derives structure by combining elements from the natural world and science. Modifying these elements digitally, Drakopoulos distills into a pattern or shape, and then layers them with a different structure and repeats the process of layering paint in resin. She tries to find the most subtle and interesting way to connect the different layers that will reveal an underlying structure or system.
Slowly as the work evolves, these inner-connections and details begin to form and define the energy and invisible forces that govern the movement of matter, from the microcosmic level of molecules and light particles, to the macrocosmic of planets and galaxies. Drakopoulos views the cosmos as a primordial, all encompassing field within which the illusion of matter is created and dissolved. Using symmetry as a basis, Drakopoulos derives structure by combining elements from the natural world and science. Modifying these elements digitally, Drakopoulos distills into a pattern or shape, and then layers them with a different structure and repeats the process of layering paint in resin. She tries to find the most subtle and interesting way to connect the different layers that will reveal an underlying structure or system.
Slowly as the work evolves, these inner-connections and details begin to form and define the energy and invisible forces that govern the movement of matter, from the microcosmic level of molecules and light particles, to the macrocosmic of planets and galaxies. Drakopoulos views the cosmos as a primordial, all encompassing field within which the illusion of matter is created and dissolved.
