Makenzi was trained in the contemporary Shona stone carving tradition, and thus his works take on themes from African as well as from European art history. His sculptures of the human face have the abstracted qualities of traditional African sculptures and masks...

John Piet "Untitled" Abstract Geometric Steel
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY John Piet's "Untitled" from 1974 is a welded sculpture with two opposing forms connected by a swoop of steel. Piet's sculptural work explores the tension between contending elements, and other works investigating the relationship of heaven and earth. The form shown here in Untitled appears similar to the form in his 1975 large-scale work The Entrance currently located at the entrance of Harmonie Park in Detroit. The abstract drawing in the pictures above is part of the sculpture offer. The drawing was a study, work-in-progress, as John "worked out" the details of the final sculpture. John Piet was born in Detroit on American Street, and was educated at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now named College for Creative Studies). College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, Hughie Lee-Smith and Joseph Wesner. He received his MFA from Wayne State University where other well-known individuals taught or studied including Arthur Danto, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Susan Aaron-Taylor, Tyree Guyton, Hughie Lee-Smith, Philip Levine, Casey Kasem and Helen Thomas. Picasso Madoura Ceramic A.R. 519 Le Verre Sous La Lampe
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Pablo Picasso A.R. 519 Le Verre Sous La Lampe 1964 13” x 10” Edition of 100 Terracotta clay, inscribed 'Edition Picasso' with the Madoura stamp. Ramie 519 is a Madoura ceramic that one rarely sees come on the market. The photo you see here is the actual piece that you will receive. Most sellers online post using stock photos that don’t necessarily match exactly to the piece you receive. This particular piece is pristine: there are no nicks, bruises or scratches of any kind. Be careful when buying from others – the pieces sometimes have nicks or scratches. The Certificate of Authenticity comes with this piece. We have sold over 3300 pieces with all positive reviews. We are located in the USA. When you buy from a foreign seller on 1stdibs, you have to consider the problems of getting the piece through Customs. There are often delays and considerable fees to pay in order to import the item. When purchasing from us, we ship the same day and you receive it via FedEx the next day, no problems or hassles. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay a buyer’s premium of anywhere from 23% to 28% over the “hammer price”. So when you “win” an auction for $20,000, the actual price paid is more like $25,000. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price agreed to is the price paid by the buyer, no hidden fees. When you purchase from an auction house, you pay the packing and shipping fees, which are usually exorbitant. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the price includes packing and shipping. When you purchase from an auction house, the sale is final. If you receive the piece and are not 100% satisfied with it, there is nothing you can do about it. You are stuck with it. By contrast, when purchasing from us, the buyer can determine if they want to keep it. If not, the buyer returns to piece to us for full refund, and we pay the shipping both ways! The prices of Picasso Madoura Ceramics have been on fire lately (no pun intended). The major auction houses – Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips – have now been regularly holding Picasso Madoura Ceramic auctions...

Wishbone 1, Amagansett, NY, 2021
Located in Hudson, NY
ABOUT This wishbone is charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base. “There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages. “Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?” “Mushroom #3” a charred white oak sculpture that is versatile in design so it can act as an end table or a stool. It is masterfully crafted and brings to mind the redwood stools...
