Canaan Ngandu
'Footballer (Soccer Player)' original stone sculpture signed by Canaan Ngandu

2003

About the Item

'Footballer (Soccer Player)' is an original opal serpentine sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Canaan Musiyiwa Ngandu. The sculpture presents an abstract figure in Ngandu's quintessential style: Like a reed of grass, the figure's arm raises from the base of the sculpture and up toward the sky as their torso likewise wraps down and under. Their head, a sphere, sits in the middle as though about to fly upward like a kicked football. opal serpentine 44 x 15 x 5 inches 110 lbs concrete base in image included at request of buyer hole drilled in base to accommodate 0.5-inch diameter support rod signed "Canaan Ngandu" along bottom edge on reverse acquired directly from the artist overall excellent condition with no signs of wear or damage Canaan Musiyiwa Ngandu was born on June 6th, 1972 to a family of eight in Goromonzi, Zimbabwe. He is of the Soko Murimirwa (Mukanya) totem. His first rural home was in Chiweshe Mashonganyika kraal Musiyiwa Village, but he grew up in Chitungwiza. He went to his primary school at Seke 11 Primary School between 1979 and 1985, and his secondary level at Seke 5 High School from 1986 to 1989. After school he worked as an assistant upholsterer in Msasa industrial Area until 1991, giving him a sense of good craftsmanship. Canaan's career as an artist started early in 1992 when he started working with his friend, the artist John Type, as an assistant in Type’s studio. After only a year as an assistant, Type encouraged him to begin working the stone himself. As friends they used to argue about compositional choices. In late 1993 Canaan produced his first sculpture – a stork bird – with the assistance of John. Not keeping only to figurative sculpture, his second work was purely abstract. Canaan in particular wished to emulate the work of the late Kennedy Nigari and Masaya, who are among the second and first generations of Shona sculptors respectively. As Canaan said: "I do not hesitate to say it is the works of Masaya and Nigari with courageous words of friend John Type that has molded and shaped me to be an artist I am today." Canaan enjoys visionary and creative carving that combines nature with human feeling, as well as combining both modern and cultural lifestyles. He carves abstract figures, birds and heads. His sculptures are displayed across the world in Holland, Belgium, USA, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Germany and around Zimbabwe. Canaan is happily married to Fenia and has a son Tashinga and daughter Chido.

Intricate, ethereal and highly textured, the abstract compositions of Japanese mosaic artist Toyoharu Kii reflect a sophisticated approach to the technical art of mosaic making. Classically trained in Florence, Italy, Kii creates his modern mosaics using traditional techniques and materials, including hand-cut Italian marble and Venetian smalti glass. Eschewing the figural in favor of the abstract, his mosaics rely on contrasts of pattern and form to convey complex themes and achieve visual harmony. Toyoharu Kii’s latest body of work “Geophytes” continues themes of rebirth and renewal. A reference to plants that regrow from hidden elements beneath the earth’s surface, the series celebrates the resilience of the natural world. Each mosaic is imagined as a landscape that documents a history of environmental damage due to human activity, and the subsequent return of nature as a restorative force. Through the juxtaposition of patterns and the interplay of order and disorder, Kii creates man-made “images of destruction” and finds hope in the future by “reconstructing nature.” In this mosaic entitled "Ghost (Big Wings)," Kii takes a more representational approach to his storytelling, creating figurative drawings out of thin lines of tesserae. The mosaic belongs to his “Ghost” triptych, wherein Kii uses “wings” to represent the presence of a heavenly being, the ghosts of past spirits or the presence of an angel or guardian. In “Ghost (Big Wings),” Kii mourns the extinction of many creatures due to environmental change and imagines their lonely spirits wandering the earth. Enveloping their silhouettes is “a bird with big wings,” writes Kii, depicted here within a dense mosaic of abstract patterns, a symbol for nature’s healing power. “The bird consoles...
