Rare Israeli Modernist Figurative Abstract Gouache Painting
By Yosl Bergner
Located in Surfside, FL
Mixed Media, Watercolor and Gouache Bergner, Yosl (Vladimir Jossif) (b Vienna, 13 Oct 1920). surrealist, surrealism. belongs to the generation of people uprooted from childhood landscapes and forced by circumstance to build a life elsewhere. Uniquely, he became an Israeli without shedding his Jewish cosmopolitan-refugee identity, an identity he zealously guarded in the melting pot of Israel of the "fifties" and "sixties". In the years that have passed since he acquired his art education at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School in Australia, concepts in the art world have changed many times over. from the Jewish paintings and the depictions of Australian Aborigines through the children of safed, the wall paintings, the masks, the angels and kings, the still lifes, the "Surrealistic" paintings, the toys and flowers, the paintings inspired by the Bird-head Haggada, the Kafka paintings, the Pioneers, the Kimberley fantasy (about his father's excursion in 1933 to northern Australia, in search of a "territory for the Jews"), Brighton Beach and the seascapes inspired by Eugene Boudin, through the chairs in the "Kings of Nissim Aloni" episode to the "Zionists" and the recent "Tahies". "During the six years that Bergner has lived in Israel," wrote Eugene KoIb, Direct. or of the Tel Aviv Museum, in the catalog of the Bergner exhibit in 1957, "he has established himself among Israeli artists." Bergner was indeed one of the artists who represented Israel in the Venice Biennial (1956; 1958) and in the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1957; this, in spite of the fact that Yosl Bergner did not harness his art to serve the Zionist ethos, that being, at the time, the order of the day (his paintings were in fact rejected at first as being those of a "Diaspora Jew"); he didn't "naturalize" himself by alliance to the country's landscape or its special light, nor did he turn to abstract painting. Painter of "the Jewish condition". the painter involved in Nissim Aloni's theater and the popular illustrator of poetry books...

Contemporary Pattern and Decoration piece, The original movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch were early proponents of this style. The artist lives and works in New York City. Acrylic on Panel Titled: Contradiction
By William Finlayson Jr.
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Large acrylic painting on wood panel Born in Tallahasee Fl, William started his artistic career as a color consultant for his family's Design and Painting company that took on constant projects of custom painted interiors and decorating. This work of 20 yrs lead him to his fascination with textiles and paint, along with custom furniture. After creating and selling dozens of unique pieces of furniture, here began his transition from wall, to wood on furniture, to canvas. Painting on canvas was the culmination of his creative outlet. William feels that his lack of formal training in Fine Art has afforded him a freedom to paint what he envisions and feels, rather than conform to specific style or genre that he feels is limiting Inspired by hard edge abstraction and color field art such as Kenneth Noland, Joseph Albers, Gene Davis, Frank Stella, Anne Truitt, Imi knobel.William is showing his work locally and nationally and being collected in Palm Beach Island, Washington and New York. American Vivid Abstract Expressionist Art Oil Painting Norman Carton, WPA Artist
By Norman Carton
Located in Surfside, FL
Norman Carton (1908 – 1980) was an American artist and educator known for abstract expressionist art. He was born in the Ukraine region of Imperial Russia and moved to the United States in 1922 where he spent most of his adult life. A classically trained portrait and landscape artist, Carton also worked as a drafter, newspaper illustrator, muralist, theater set designer, photographer, and fabric designer and spent most of his mature life as an art educator. Carton showed in and continues to be shown in many solo and group exhibitions. His work is included in numerous museums and private collections throughout the world. Norman Carton was born in the Dnieper Ukraine territory of the Russian Empire in 1908. Escaping the turbulence of civil war massacres, he settled in Philadelphia in 1922 after years of constant flight. While attending the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, Carton worked as a newspaper artist for the Philadelphia Record from 1928 to 1930 in the company of other illustrator/artists who had founded the Ashcan School, the beginnings of modern American art. From 1930 to 1935, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Henry McCarter, who was a pupil of Toulouse-Lautrec, Puvis de Chavanne, and Thomas Eakins. Arthur Carles, especially with his sense of color, and the architect John Harbison also provided tutelage and inspiration. Following his time at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Carton studied at the Barnes Foundation from 1935 to 1936 where he was influenced by an intellectual climate led by visiting lecturers John Dewey and Bertrand Russell as well as daily access to Albert C. Barnes and his art collection. Carton was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship in 1934 which allowed him to travel through Europe and study in Paris. There he expanded his artistic horizons with influences stemming from Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Chaim Soutine, and Wassily Kandinsky. While at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Carton was also awarded the Toppan Prize for figure painting as well as the Thouron Composition Prize. He received numerous commissions as a portrait artist, social realist, sculptor, and theatrical stage designer as well as academic scholarships. During this time, Carton worked as a scenery designer at Sparks Scenic Studios, a drafter at the Philadelphia Enameling Works, and a fine art lithographer. From 1939 to 1942, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project employed Carton as a muralist and easel artist. He collaborated with architect George Howe. The WPA commissioned Carton to paint major murals at the Helen Fleischer Vocational School for Girls in Philadelphia, the Officers’ Club at Camp Meade Army Base in Maryland, and in the city of Hidalgo, Mexico. Throughout the 1940s, Carton exhibited and won prizes for his semi-abstract Expressionist and Surrealist paintings. He socialized with and was inspired by Émile Gauguin and Fernand Leger. During World War II, Carton was a naval structural designer and draftsman at the Cramps Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, New Jersey. Here, he created non-objective sculpture with metal. After the war, Carton co-founded a fabric design plant in Philadelphia. He produced hand-printed fabrics for interiors and fashion that were featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily. Original fabric designs were commissioned by notable clients including Lord & Taylor, Gimbels, and Nina Ricci. Some of these designs are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Carton traded his partnership in the fabric design company in 1949 to focus full-time on painting. Carton had his first solo exhibition in 1949 at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. This show was followed closely by solo exhibitions at the Laurel Gallery (New York City) and Dubin Gallery (Philadelphia). At this time, his exhibited work was Abstract impressionism. In addition to painting, he taught classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was the Founder and first President of the Philadelphia chapter of Artist’s Equity Association. The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the organization of the National Museums of France commissioned Carton to travel to Europe, mainly France, in 1950 for a color photography study of continental masterpieces. He was granted access to study the restoration of the Mona Lisa and was one of the very few to be given permission to remove the painting from its frame. During his three year stay in Paris, he had solo exhibits at La Sorbonne and Gallery Rene Breteau and was in 15 group shows in Paris salons including Les Sur Independants, Salon d’Automne, and Realities Nouvelles. He also exhibited at the Musee d’Art Juif where he won the Prix d’Art. The Cercle Paul Valery twice sponsored Carton to present lectures at the Sorbonne. He conducted seminars at the Louvre for the Cercle Esthetique Internationale and taught classes in and directed stage and costume design for the Theatre de Recherche at the Paris Opera. Among his Paris artist colleagues were Chana Orloff, Earl Kerkam, Sam Francis, Claire Falkenstein, Lawrence...

NAMO EK YOGE, Abstract Geometric Rainbow Composition Painting
By Jeet Aulakh
Located in Surfside, FL
Born and raised in India, Canadian Contemporary artist Jeet Aulakh participates in a rich and varied cultural and social history in which notions of humanity are indivisible into secular and spiritual realms. A central theme in Indian philosophy is the ultimate release from the subservience of life and all its contingent aspects: to be detached from life by the realization of the “absolute supreme principle”, which is itself beyond definition. The goal is to achieve, through inner realization, a reintegration into this indefinable absolute realm. Aulakh ably depicts this other abstract realm through the use of floating circles of saturated colour seemingly floating in the dark to evoke cosmic cycles in which human history and individual identity is peripheral. The radiant world of the enraptured, disembodied soul is undiminished by this enveloping cosmic darkness. His images suggest a cosmic egg...

Large Modernist Figurative Abstract Oil Painting BASKET
By Marlene Bauer
Located in Surfside, FL
A Pacific Northwest native, Bauer was born in Vancouver, Washington, and has maintained a studio in Portland, Oregon since 1976. She attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art and the University of Oregon where she received her M.F.A. Since that time, she has exhibited her work throughout the Northwest while teaching art as an associate professor at Marylhurst University. Bauer applies her modernist approach to her artwork, and her paintings become a sort of balancing act in reconciling her subjects and her techniques. Teetering between abstraction and representational, Bauer's houses are depicted as simplified forms, exploiting a universal iconography. The recognizable elements in her artwork – trees, buildings – are unconventionally depicted in wide patches of overlapping color, "pulling each painting away from literal interpretation." Marlene Bauer's abstractions stem from her interest in the visual dynamics of a quick impression of a landscape from a moving car or a glance out a window. The artist has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions at the Laura Russo Gallery, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery (both in Portland), and the Davidson Galleries in Seattle. Bauer's artwork is included in many of the region's public and private collections including the King County Regional Justice Center, Bank of America, the City of Portland, the City of Seattle, the Oregon State...

Turkish LA Artist Modernist Abstract Portrait in Silver Leaf on Paper Painting
By Ali Acerol
Located in Surfside, FL
Ali Acerol, who was born in Bursa, Turkey in 1948 and died in Los Angeles in 2007, became a kind of legend in the Southern California art world for his stunning maps of countries and continents, his invented and satiric postage stamps, and his brick furniture— as well as for being stubborn, impossible, and brilliant. He grew up in Istanbul, then was educated at the Sorbonne, in Paris. Acerol said that his earliest memories were of taking walks with his father in Istanbul and noticing old brick walls. He continued his fine arts education in 1975 at CalArts in Southern California. This piece contains elements of Arabic and Islamic calligraphic abstraction. This first posthumous exhibition of works is drawn primarily from the collection of Richard Hertz, author of two influential works on the local art scene: Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia and The Beat and the Buzz: Inside the LA Art World. The show includes Acerol’s magnificent eight by twelve-foot World Map that has not been seen in public for over thirty years. The World Map, covered with sign language that names the countries and cities, was originally Acerol’s MFA thesis project. Like all his works, it does not speak in simple terms. As critic Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe wrote, Ali’s art is about parallel meanings and mutual incomprehension — “lots of little hands where there should be words, a symbolic code unfamiliar to most…” Turkish Artist Ali arrived in California in 1975 after seven years in Paris and enrolled at Cal Arts, then in its fifth year of existence. Soon he became close friends with such well-known artists as John Baldessari and Michael Asher, the godfathers of the art program, along with many colleagues such as Diane Buckler...

Large Modernist Italian Oil Painting Surrealist Abstract Figures
By Marco Cingolani
Located in Surfside, FL
Marco Cingolani was born in Como in 1961 and moved to Milan at a very young age, in 1978. He began to frequent the underground creative environment, where art was mixed with fashion and punk music. In those years a new artistic sensibility was being formalized in Milan, whose roots no longer sank in the history of art and in the citation but practiced the critical manipulation of reality and its communication through the mass media. The image was taken out of context, subtracted from the use of common sense, radically distorted, almost mocked. The work of Marco Cingolani, from the beginning, has always tried to cancel the regulatory power of media images, subjecting them to the radical care of the artist, certain that art offers a decisive point of view for the interpretation of the world. In this context the interviews of the Interviews were born, where celebrities for their privacy were submerged by the microphones and the famous series dedicated to the attack on the Pope and to the tragic story of Aldo Moro. After having participated in numerous group exhibitions including An emerging scene (1991, Museo Pecci, Prato) and Two or three things that I know of them (1998, PAC, Milan), he is dedicated to major anthological exhibitions at prestigious public institutions such as Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and Promoter of Fine Arts in Turin. In November 2006 he took part in the collective exhibition "Senza famiglia", in the Palace of the Promoter of Fine Arts in Turin. In 2007 Cingolani received a further consecration: the Galleria Emilio Mazzoli hosts the exhibition entitled "What color are they?" in which the pictorial reflections on the color of Power and its disguises are presented. The art of Cingolani has always been fascinated by the passage from news to history and vice versa; also in this case the UN blue helmets, the red urn containing the electoral ballots, the multicolored segments of the Wall Street charts, the military uniforms and the party flags are contextualized in highly symbolic scenarios. In 2009 a return to the origins for Marco Cingolani, often the author of works expressly inspired by the religious theme. In particular, for this exhibition entitled " Percorsi della Fede", the artist focused his attention on the Marian apparitions that have marked the last two centuries: Lourdes and Fatima . In the same year an exhibition in Lucca at the National Museum of Villa Guinigi, joins him to some of the leading Italian artists of the last two generations; by the universally recognized and celebrated masters, present in the main international museums such as Mimmo Paladino, Sandro Chia, Salvo, passing through some of the protagonists of the 52nd Venice Biennale as Gian Marco Montesano, Daniele Galliano, Nicola Bolla, Bertozzi & Casoni who exhibited in 2009 in contemporary at the Lucca exhibition and at the Italian Pavilion of the Venetian event, to get to the young artists of the last generation already present in important national and international artistic events. Giacinto di Pietrantonio invites him the following year, 2010 to PAC, Pavilion of contemporary art in Milan, for the collective exhibition "Hybrid", alongside Jan Fabre, Gilbert & George, Charles Avery, Damien Hirst, Piotr Uklanski, Patrick Tuttofuoco and other great ones on the international scene. 2012 is the year of "Il Belpaese dell'arte", at Gamec di Bergamo, always curated by Pietrantonio and Maria Cristina Rodeschini, in the company of Elmgreen...

Israeli Contemporary Abstract Geometric Painted Pierced Sculpture Zigi Ben Haim
By Zigi Ben-Haim
Located in Surfside, FL
Zigi Ben-Haim, Metal sculpture Hand signed and dated Zigi Ben-Haim, 1998 Untitled, patinated aluminum or steel, Dimensions: 6"h x 2"w x 2"d This listing is for 1. I have 2 similar ones available. Zigi Ben-Haim (born 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American-Israeli painter, collage artist and sculptor who lives and works in New York City and Israel. Ben-Haim unveiled his sculpture, Treasure the Green, in SoHo on Broadway. The project was sponsored by the SoHo Broadway Initiative and the New York Department of Transportation's Art Program. The sculpture is considered to be the first sculpture to receive permission to be installed on a bus bulb on Broadway. The sculpture was made to "emphasize the importance of nature in our lives," and stands as a reminder of "the importance of reconnecting with the pure nature of the green." The sculpture uses the symbol of the leaf, which has been a major icon of Ben-Haim's work for the past 30 years. It symbolizes nature and it is a metaphoric way of emphasizing nature and the surrounding environment. He is of the first generation of Israeli artists to develop large international followings like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman and Avigdor Arikha. Ben-Haim has received numerous grants and awards, including from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, National Endowments for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emily Harvey Foundation Venice, Muestra Int. de Obra Grafica (Spain), and the Ministry of Culture in Israel. His works are included and exhibited in numerous public and private collections around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in N.Y.C., the Jewish Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Israel Museum, and the Tel-Aviv Museum. Education 1972-74 M.F.A., San Francisco State University, San Francisco, California, USA. 1972-73 M.A., J.F.K. California Contemporary Art Marti Somers Figurative Abstract Whimsical Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Marti Somers Rice Bowl (an Asian inspired image with chopsticks and a bowl of rice) with fish. hand written poem verso. 24 X 24 inches A California artist, Somers received her BFA at the University of Hawaii. She returned to California and worked as a graphic designer at Stanford University and was a principal at Artefact Design in Palo Alto. But ultimately turned to painting. She opened Studio Believe in San Carlos and co-founded Somersault Studios, a non-profit publishing venture to benefit the arts of Northern California. Somers’ sensibility is both poetic and suggestive. Her scrapbook-like merger of natural images (both painted and collage) and writing, rendered in tactile, fragrant wax-based encaustic paint, is seductive and convincing. Rich compilations of vintage images, words, colors, and textures. Flowers, trees, and leaves share the space in each picture with animals, fragments of patterned paper, layers of thin oil paint over thick, glazes that partially obscure one layer and provide a new layer to work with. Stylized flowers, butterflies and birds appear prominently within Somers’ heavily textured, ‘antiqued’ bands of color and pattern. Robert Rauschenberg meets Odilon Redon in her assemblage juxtapositions of dreamy words and images. She has exhibited her work at Caldwell Snyder...

Oil on Canvas of Brigitte Bardot 57.5 x 82.5
By Christina Major
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Quotes within painting: "A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity that will never cease looking back at you. Do you have to have a reason for loving? It is sad to grow old but nice to ripen. I leave before being left. I decide. I left a world in which I was a queen to enter one in which I'm a human being. I am not an actress. I can only play me - on and off the screen Every age can be enchanting, provided you live within it My wild and free side unsettled some, and unwedged others When I love, I do it without counting. I give myself entirely. And each time, it is the grand love of my life I never do anything by chance. People are forever finding something wrong with you. I have been very happy, very rich, very beautiful, much adulated, very famous and very unhappy. Success is unpredictable and fragile." As an undergraduate Christina Major developed into a portrait painter. Major has been interested in the ways the identity of both artist and subject can coexist in a portrait. Major also has a desire to combine portrait painting with writing (inspired from her Graphic Design studies) as well as to develop methods of using paint to express a merging of herself with the individual depicted in the portrait. Her creative research focuses on the traditional form of the portrait as a powerful form of representing an individual and how meaning can be expanded through scale, brushstroke, color, texture, composition and the many variables that portraiture deals with. Major looks to expand on the traditional portrait painting...

German Mixed Media Puzzle Art Contemporary Abstract Painting Frank Aumueller
Located in Surfside, FL
Dimensions: 19" x 13" including frame, 17.5" x 11.5" image only. Frank Aumüller is a contemporary artist. Frank Aumüller is a german male artist born in Stuttgart (DE) in 1960. Frank Aumueller had his first exhibition at Art Cologne 1989 at Koelnmesse GmbH in Cologne in 1989, and Prognose at Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart in 2021. A notable show was 2041 Endlosschleife at Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart in 2014. Other notable shows were at Villa Merkel - Galerie der Stadt Esslingen in Esslingen and Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg. Frank Aumüller has been exhibited with Hildegard Esslinger and Beate Baumgärtner. Aumuellers jigsaw puzzle pictures are results of a multistage production process. Expressive, partially with strong auto-lacquers created paintings form the basis. Aumueller then takes a photograph of these abstract color experiments and cuts the photo by machine into jigsaw puzzles. Afterwards he reassembles individual parts, whereby the original parts produce a new picture in a new composition, a sculpture work. At first sight the jigsaw puzzle pictures appear as a "pleasant idea": The result of time-consuming artistic creation is presented as a well-known game for children and adults. This appears to be an ironic move by Aumueller. However, irony is not the artist's concern. There is more to the jigsaw puzzles than just a nice conception: Aumueller labels his jigsaw puzzles "unstable equilibria" - a suitable description for many things in a world which in many ways appears to be stable and arranged. The jigsaw puzzle is more than just a means of formal expression. Aumueller labels his jigsaw puzzles "unstable equilibria" - a suitable description for many things in a world which in many ways appears to be stable and arranged. Outsider Ryan Humphrey Street Art Collage, Large Painting Jackson Pollock Photo
By Ryan Humphrey
Located in Surfside, FL
Where the Road Crashes into the Sea, 2008 Aluminum, rivets, glass, acrylic paint, fabric Dimensions: 55 1/2 x 55" Mixed Media Sculptural Wall Hanging Art. This painting was made after visiting the location of the fatal Jackson Pollock car crash and includes a silkscreen photograph of the scene. The letters are formed from cut up old license plates. Ryan Humphrey (born 1971) is an American artist who currently lives and works in New York City. Education: BFA, Ohio University, MFA, Hunter College, New York 1999; Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, 2001; Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, NY, 2005-2006 Ryan Humphrey grew up in a small town in Ohio building things in his yard, riding BMX bikes and skateboarding. He then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the next three years to work at The Carnegie Museum of Art and obtain a commercial art degree where he developed an interest in contemporary fine art. This inspired him (along with a scholarship) to attend Ohio University where he earned his BFA in Sculpture. After moving to New York City he received his MFA from Hunter College, paying his way through school by working at The Dia Center for the Arts. After attending The Skowhegan summer residency program in Maine he worked for The Andy Warhol Foundation and participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He has exhibited extensively. He currently lives and works in New York City. His work has been featured in the traveling exhibition Will Boys Be Boys? Lee, Julia Loktev, Maria Marshall, Ryan McGinness, Chloe Piene, Jeff Reed, Tom Sachs, Dean Sameshima, Collier Schorr, Type A (Adam Ames and Andrew Bordwin Humphrey's most recent solo exhibition, All of Nothing, was at DCKT Contemporary. Humphrey was also a contestant in Season I of Top Design, Bravo's reality show. Recently, Humphrey was included in the Queens International 4 exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art. His large-scale installation, titled Fast Forward (2009), included BMX ramps adjacent to a wall-to-ceiling assemblage tapestry, collection of trophies and customized BMX bikes, and he continued this theme in his installation Look for the dream that keeps coming back (2010) at Kunsthalle Galapagos. Humphrey expresses his growing up in BMX and skateboard culture through his art. The assemblage also included several paintings, created by the artist for the exhibition, and several sculptures of BMX bike wheels. The paintings were small drips that recall the works of Jackson Pollock, and the BMX sculptures are similar to Marcel Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel. The installation included an opening night performance by legendary BMX pro Dizz Hicks and Ryan Humphrey on the ramps. An edition of 20 silkscreen posters was made by the artist, and signed by himself and Dizz Hicks, to commemorate the event. He was included in the show 5 X 5 at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris. Reed Anderson, Rina Banerjee, Susan Graham, Ryan Humphrey and Larry Krone -- each created a work inspired by one (post-1985) from the museum's own collection. Christopher Wool, Donald Lipski...
