May 29 (Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting in Earth Tones of Green & Blue)
By James O'Shea
Located in Hudson, NY
Gestural, abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in earth tones of blue and green, with accents of burgundy and pale yellow "May 29", Painted by Hudson Valley based artist, James O'Shea in 2021 Oil on canvas, 26 x 26 inches unframed, raw canvas sides Wire backing, ready to hang Signed verso James O’Shea’s deeply pigmented abstractions are grounded in the landscape. Taking his cues from the bare winter months in the Northeast when the horizon is stripped of its foliage, he suggests that “So much of life’s structure reveals itself when it goes into hibernation”. The architecture in O’Shea’s compositions takes form with expressive gestures using...

What Do I know of This Place 5 (Abstract Expressionist Painting on Canvas)
By Jenny Nelson
Located in Hudson, NY
Vertical, abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in stone blue, dusty peach, green and black, against an off-white grey background 'What Do I know of This Place (5)' painted by Hudson Valley artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2021 Oil on canvas 20 x 16 x 2 inches, with white painted sides Excellent condition, ready to hang Signed, verso This vertical abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2021. The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of stone blue, midnight blue, dusty peach, and green. The contrasting patches of dark yellow and forest green pop against the subtle pale beige-grey background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting is unframed, with white painted sides so framing is optional. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scrape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected over and over again have an emotional charge. This process that started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving the life force in tact. About the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Specifically Nowhere, Yellow (Abstract Geometric Painting with Grids on Yellow)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Large abstract geometric painting with intricate line work in pencil and gouache on a bright yellow background "Specifically, Nowhere (Yellow)" made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 gouache, acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil on paper, mounted on panel 48 x 48 inches unframed, 50 x 50 inches with a dark brown stained wood floater frame Surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This large abstract geometric painting was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish. More about the work: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. No. 2: Abstract Expressionist Oil on Canvas Paper in Blue, Teal & Light Pink
By Jenny Nelson
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract expressionist style painting on canvas paper in teal, dark blue, and pink with accents of green 'Untitled 2 (Blue & Pink)' by Jenny Nelson Oil on canvas paper, Painted in 2016 14.5 x 10.5 inch painting in 20 x 16 inch white 8-ply mat This modern abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2016. The colorful abstract is composed of calming tones of teal and dark blue. The contrasting patches of pinks and green beautifully pop against the subtle pale pink background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting includes an 20 x 16 inch 8 ply matte and is signed on the lower right hand corner. About the Artist: It is with her commitment to a lifelong, organic process that Jenny Nelson has achieved what so many artists and creatives work for; a language and a technique that is very much her own. She has wooed audiences here and abroad with consistently exquisite and balanced abstract paintings in neutral palettes of blues and grays that give way to pops of pink and orange. But to pin her as solely an abstractionist would be limiting her skill and versatility as a painter. Classically trained at Bard College, Nelson’s thorough knowledge of composition and color relationships as experienced through drawing from life are the tools that prepared her to work in abstraction and develop her technique. Nelson begins all her paintings the same way; she mixes an extensive palette of colors, preps the square canvas, and goes to town obliterating the surface with lots of color and wild gestures using oil sticks and brushes. After sitting with the discomfort and rawness that remains, Nelson turns the canvas around and around until a shape or color comes to the foreground. The next step is reductive as she blocks out bits of chaos with a solid color applied with a palette knife, oil sticks and brushes. Tension is built through the push and pull of paint as it is layered over colors and unruly forms. Nelson studies the painting at all stages of this process, waiting for it to communicate the next step until harmony and balance is achieved. Each work, with its own identity demanding attention and complete surrender to the process, may seem daunting at the onset. But Nelson is comforted by the perspective that painting is infinite and each new canvas is just one of many, therefore easing her expectations. Some pieces in this new body of work differ from previous paintings in that the abstractions are once again rooted in life. Inspired by the photographs of artist Joseph Podlesnik, Nelson uses his architectural and observational compositions as the framework for her new work. While the origins of the photographs’ subjects are not recognizable in the finished painting, she channels the energy discovered in his real-life findings to her canvas for a result that is entirely abstract. Invigorated by this approach, Nelson bravely moves forward, prepared to shift genres if that is where her journey takes her. A graduate of Bard College, Jenny Nelson also studied at the Lacoste School of the Arts in France and Maine College of Art. She completed a Residency at Byrdcliffe Art Colony from 2004 – 2008 and has exhibited regionally and nationally for many years. Nelson currently teaches workshops and an ongoing weekly class at the Woodstock School of Art. More about the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Instead (Colorful Gestural Geometric Abstract Painting on Panel)
By Anne Francey
Located in Hudson, NY
Colorful abstract painting with geometric details in bright hues of blue, red, green, and yellow, against a black background "Instead", painted by Anne Francey in 2017 Mixed media on Masonite 10 x 10 x 2 inches, sides reveal raw wood Excellent condition, signed verso Ready to hang Anne Francey has been working with subject matter inspired by nature for most of her artistic career. Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering. But I know that a story is being told, even if I don’t understand yet all the words.” About the artist: Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting. In 1981, she moved to New York where she attended the School of Visual Arts and the graduate program of Fine Arts at Hunter College. She graduated in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background "Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022 Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum 24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Minimalist Abstract Color Field Painting in Emerald Green on 2 Panels (C14-10)
By Ginny Fox
Located in Hudson, NY
Nature-Inspired Minimalist Abstract Color Field painting on three wood panels in shades of Emerald Green by Ginny Fox Acrylic on 2 panels Each panel is 30 x 40 x 2 inches Overall measurement for horizontal install with 2 inch recommended spacing, 30" X 82" X 2" *Panels may be oriented in various configurations Ginny Fox achieves a smooth and complex surface by applying multiple flawless layers of acrylic paint, wiping it on and off with cotton cloth, to create a subtle yet distinctive woven texture on a smooth surface. The artist's work is inspired by patterns found in nature such as tree rings, rock lines, ethereal horizons, or water ripples. It appears as though a light source is originating behind the panel, glowing softly in a pale, dreamy green palette. This unique surface spreads all the way to the very edge of each panel. The 2 inch deep sides are cleanly painted white for a seamless finish. These panels hang flush to the wall by resting on two nails on either side of the panel, and can be arranged in any number of ways, highlighting the work's sculptural element. Artist's Statement: My paintings merge the detailed textures and colors found in the natural world with the linear and geometric patterns visible in industrial and architectural structures. The interplay of these elements drives the work and provides a platform for constant change and narrative. By simultaneously layering and removing paint with rags instead of brushes, my hand is directly involved with the process. Each piece contains multiple panels that evoke a nuanced and evolving universe. Ginny Fox builds up each non-representational piece with overlapping streaks of paint that frequently span two or three panels. Working with rags instead of brushes, Fox’s hand moves along parallel paths, emergent colors cascading gently towards the edges of the composition's plane. There’s something vaporous to the outer layers of the work, the interwoven strands of color offering glimpses at the painting’s earthy base and hinting at the artist’s gradual process. Having received her education from New York University in the 1970s, Fox has since exhibited throughout the United States, especially in New York City and the northeastern U.S. RESUME Solo Exhibits 2019 Winterscape Soho20 Bushwick, New York 2017 Perpetual Earth Soho20 Bushwick, New York 2015 Intimate Universe Soho20 Chelsea New York...
