4 Mid-20th Century Asian Cast Bronze Figures on Black Wood Plaques Signed Gansu

Marvelous vintage Asian plaques of cast bronze figures mounted on black painted plywood backgrounds signed Gansu, set of 4. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, each plaque background has had a fresh coat of black paint however, they still have nicks, dings, and chiggers appropriate with age. We added new hangers, and the bronze figures retain their original patinated finish. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. If you are a lover of arts and culture, we have the perfect plaques for you!! We have four marvelous cast bronze Asian figures articulating extraordinary expressions of what we believe to be visual arts, culinary arts, musical arts, and performance arts. Each cast bronze figure is mounted upon a rectangular freshly painted black plywood base plaque, each bearing differing patina or signs appropriate with age such as nicks or dings that we feel only enhance the beauty of their presence. As a matter of fact, this particular set of four was among my mother’s personal collection for many years, so it holds a special place in my heart for sure!! In our research we discovered that Gansu is a province in north-central China. Its city Jiayuguan is best known for the magnificent Great Wall. Awesome!! Each cast bronze figure exudes their own form of art, celebrating life and all of the beauty that comes with it. One holds a serving tray with a couple of glasses and a carafe… in my world there is probably a delicious red wine inside that carafe just waiting to pass through my lips!! Whatever it may be, it must be something lovely, delicious, and a bit mysterious! Another figure embraces an incredible sculpture that drapes from the tip of her shoulder, under her arm, and secretly swoops behind her. Behold… a vision of loveliness left to your imagination … a puzzling and optically pleasing piece of artistry. While another figure proudly plays a flute, twinkling their fingers across the keys… filling the air with joyful notes & sounds that tickle your ears… But let’s not leave out the last figure dancing blissfully to the beat… skipping and shuffling her bare feet in the sand. Wonderful pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern corner step tables from Coronado Group by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture. Gorgeous condition. This pair of tables have been completely restored to their original glory. The tops have been stripped and repainted and the legs have been sanded and given a fresh finish. Double Delightful-ness!! This is a stunning pair of vintage Mid-Century Modern corner step tables from the Coronado Group designed in 1955 by Luther Draper for Founders Furniture. Their long straight legs with cross stretchers and beautiful brass sabots on the feet are eye catching and sophisticated. They are square with a corner angled step and comprised of a superb matte finished hardwood with Classic back beveled edges. Founders Furniture was started in 1947 as a subsidiary of the esteemed Knoll International for their residential line and then merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1965.
It is said that Luther Draper designed for the whose-who of high caliber furniture companies in the mid-century. He designed The Coronado Group collection for Founders Furniture in 1955. He had an unmistakable clean, modern mark he left on his work. He also designed fabulous furniture including the “India Teakwood” collection for White Furniture Company and the well known “Boomerang Desk” for Alma, which was recognized for its prize-winning office furnishings. George Briard is a nom de plume for designer and artist Jascha Brojdo who was born May 17, 1917, in Poland. He was born Jakub Brojdo but changed his name to Jascha upon moving to Chicago in 1937 where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA. During WWII he served on General George S. Patton’s staff as an interpreter. He ended up in New York after his discharge from the Army and began working with a friend, Max Willie, from art school. It was Willie who suggested the name George Briard for his hand painted serving trays he began making and selling, and who first produced his commercial products. After painting trays for a time, he moved on to buying glassware blanks from Libbey and Anchor Hocking and embellishing them with his designs, most times in 22-karot gold. He soon learned he could license his name to those companies as well as other companies to create his designs for him. His creations became highly popular through the 1950s to 1970s. During those years you could find his name on everything from glass, to ceramic, metal, or wood and on trays, coffee pots, dishes, and more. They were offered for sale in high end department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. In 2004 he was awarded the Frank S. Child Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators. George or rather Jascha or maybe it’s Jakub passed away a year later in New York at the age of 88. His work has become sought after by collectors and his nom de plume has become a mid-century Icon.

This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous! Fabulous style! Fabulous size! Fabulous condition! Make it yours.

In 1997 Giancarlo Piretti received an award for his Torsion seating collection. These chairs are part of that collection. Designed and made initially and primarily for commercial purpose they are extremely comfortable and flexible. They are lightweight and stackable. This set has an attractive textured high impact black plastic seat, back, and arms on chrome legs. No one expects this chair have the comfort it provides. The back flexes. This flex is achieved with the torsion mechanism which creates gradually increasing resistance. They were designed for comfort during long meetings or lectures. But, that makes them perfect for long dinners with lots of conversation. Or, family night with puzzles, cards, and games.
The designer, Giancarlo Piretti, was born in Bologna Italy in 1940. He attended art schools there and subsequently taught Interior Design. During that time, he was also designing furniture for Anonima Castelli. He has won numerous awards and has items in many museums including MoMA New York. He still lives and works in Bologna with is son, designer Alessandro Piretti.

Handsome set of 6 Goodform mid-century machine age and industrial style aluminum armchairs by General Fireproofing Company. Comprised of anodized slightly gold colored aluminum frames and upholstered in a woven beige fabric. They are in wonderful vintage condition overall. The aluminum has been cleaned and gone over gently with steel wool and the fabric has been professionally cleaned. That does not mean they are free from signs of age but have a nice patina. You may wish to recover. The aluminum coloration ranges from silver to gold and is individual on each chair. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Holy cow! We are in love with these awesome Goodform chairs by General Fireproofing!! We have six and they are comprised of anodized brushed aluminum frames and bare a blend of machine age, industrial, mid-century styles. They are anodized a lovely gold color… You heard that right… Gold! Or kind-of “gliver.” A little silvery with a gold tone. Not sure exactly how to describe it, but it’s fabulous!! Two of the chairs are slightly darker gold with less silver and a little extra detail including a V-shaped overlay detail of aluminum on the front curve of the arms, so you can use those two as host and hostess chairs. Currently they are upholstered in a wool-like woven beige fabric, but we don’t think its original; however, it is in good condition and ready to use for a while but…. Wow! Would they ever look fantastic in new leather, vinyl, or maybe mohair! They have a slightly rolled seat back which is a cool detail, the arms are partially upholstered for comfort, and their stretchers and cross bars enhance their industrial look and make them sturdy enough to stand up to a family of toddlers, teenagers, or…elephants whichever you have! Ha Ha!!!

What an Excellent Ensemble of seating!!! This is a very handsome vintage set of 4 Steelcase chairs comprised of a wonderful cantilever chrome tube base and arms with lovely black plastic arm rests. They have clean, sleek, classic lines with rounded seat backs and contoured seats upholstered in their original gray faux leather or vinyl fabric. We say these chairs are mostly modern, but they would definitely blend in beautifully with Art Deco, mid-century modern, Bauhaus, and other styles. They are extremely comfortable, bursting with impeccable style, and will look wonderful surrounding any dining, office, game, or conference table!! They would also be stunning extra seating scattered about in your living or family room! This set of four is definitely superb Steelcase seating!!
Steelcase was founded as the Metal Office Furniture Company in 1912 by Peter M. Wege in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Metal Office Furniture Company's first products included fireproof metal safes and four-drawer filing cabinets which Wege invented and manufactured for the Macey Company. In 1914, the company received its first product patent for "The Victor," a fireproof steel wastebasket. The Victor gained popularity due to its light weight achieved through a patented process of bending flat steel at right angles to create boxes, and its ability to prevent fires at a time when smoking was common indoors, particularly in the workplace. In 1915, the company began manufacturing and distributing steel desks and in 1937, the company collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright on office furniture. The partnership lasted two years and resulted in some of the first modern workstations. The company officially changed its name to Steelcase, Inc. in 1954 and became known as the leader of the furniture industry in the late 1960s due to the volume of its sales and in 1973, the company debuted the Series 9000 furniture line. Well, well, well… what have we here?? We call this… serve-ware EXTRAORDINAIRE!!!! This is a lovely vintage set including a marvelous Dorothy Thorpe serving bowl with her signature silver band and original label plus three “Masterpiece in Wood” black ceruse wood nesting trays with rounded chrome corners labeled with their gold crest logo on the bottom… by Nasco, made in Japan. The silver band surrounding the bowl bears a bit of wonderful, vintage patina which we chose to leave alone as we LOVE the appearance & stories it could tell… but it could be polished if you prefer that look. The name Dorothy Thorpe is simply mid-century modern and Hollywood Regency glamour at its finest and this incredible glass serving bowl represents her iconic style while these marvelous Nasco nesting trays compliment it’s exemplary existence. The silver band on the glass bowl simply explodes as it sits beside the trays & those marvelous chrome corners… it’s quite a STUNNING set up!!! The trays would be an exceptional way to present snacks or beverages to your guests, or a table or bar hosting a lovely set of vintage glasses...

Wow! We are proud to be able to offer this gorgeous pair of winter landscapes by Dorothy Kordash. The one on the left in our photograph is titled Designs of Winter and depicts a lovely snowy landscape with bare trees and snow-covered grasses in beautiful translucent steel blues and grays and white. It is signed, matted and framed. The watercolor on the right is titled Treescape and depicts an icy blue winter wonderland of bare trees, evergreens, and grasses. These came from a home filled with incredible mid-century modern furnishings and art. They collected many Kansas and Arizona artists work including these by Dorothy Kordash.
Dorothy M. Reece Kordash was born in 1927 in Prairie Village, Kansas. She continued to live, and work in the Kansas City area. However, after retiring, she spent quite a bit of time in Scottsdale, Arizona where she passed in 2010. Her works are in private collections all over the United States. Her obituary states she was one of America’s top cutting-edge artists in the field of contemporary conceptual art and painted in a wide variety of media. She was a member of many organizations including the Kansas Watercolor Society and International Society of Experimental Artists to name just two. She was part of many, many art exhibits nationwide and attended workshops in Canada and Great Brittan.

Enigma definition: A person, object, or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand. This cupboard is just that… definitely puzzling and mysterious!! And I sure wish it could talk because I bet it has some GREAT stories to share!! Something tells me it’s seen a few things and has had quite an interesting history. It is a one-piece cabinet comprised of oak with a top and bottom section and an open center section. The doors have carvings with (what we believe are) dates back to the 1600’s. The door fronts remind me of vintage livery cupboards… they are nostalgic and quite mystifying!! We don’t believe the whole cupboard is quite the same age, hence, more mystery! We believe the body or frame of the cupboard is Early 1900’s, possibly earlier, and was made from reclaimed lumber or someone possibly took pieces of an old cabinet and repurposed it. The top section is constructed with mortise & tenon joints (no nails!), the inner top & base cabinets each enclose a single adjustable wood shelf with aged wood peg brackets, and stepped siderails or shelf supports. Both the top and lower door fronts bear enigmatic brass armoire hinges...
