Ocean Wave
By Marc Yankus
Located in New York, NY
Archival pigment print Signed, titled, numbered, and dated, verso 17 x 11 inches, sheet (Edition of 15) 22 x 17 inches, sheet (Edition of 15) This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. Originally trained as a painter, and then working as a collage artist, Marc Yankus began incorporating his own photographs into his artwork around 1999. However, when he did so, it marked a turning point in his career. In many of Yankus’ photographs, textures scanned from old tintypes, books, and other objects are digitally layered on top of the artist’s original images. The superimposition of the old and the new serves as an apt metaphor of Yankus’ wider conceptual interests. Throughout his work, the artist oscillates not only between the old and the new, the past and the present, but also between figuration and landscape. Establishing a rhythm and play between timeless portraits and beautifully still and quiet landscapes and cityscapes, Yankus’ achievement is a wonderful consistency of mood. Hushed, introspective, and at turns even melancholic, this body of work is ultimately a reflection of the artist’s personal past and his passage into the present time. Marc Yankus’ fine art and publishing experience span a period of more than thirty years. His work has been included in exhibitions at The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; Exit Art, New York City; The Library of Congress, Washington, DC; and ClampArt, New York City. Yankus’ artwork has graced the covers of books by Salman Rushdie, Philip Roth...

Shine (New York, NY)
By Frances F. Denny
Located in New York, NY
Archival pigment print (Edition of 5 + 2 APs) Signed and numbered on label, verso This photograph is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Frances F. Denny writes: “During the research process for a prior series of photographs, I discovered two related facts about my family tree: a) Mary Bliss Parsons, my 8th great-grandmother, was accused of witchcraft in 1674 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and b) less than two decades later in 1692, my 10th great-grandfather, Samuel Sewell, presided as a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. One body of work came and went, but this ancestral coincidence stayed with me. What is a witch? Who does that word belong to—now? “Major Arcana: Witches in America is a collection of portraits of women from across the United States who identify as witches. As early as 15th-century Europe, people condemned as witches faced a cruel fate: torture, and in many cases, death. Yet despite its history, recent decades have seen a reclaiming of the word ‘witch.’ In the mid-20th century, emerging pagan communities in the United States and Europe began embracing the term, and since then, ‘witch’ has been adopted by a diverse group of people. “Major Arcana explores the various ways the notion of witch-ness belongs to those who claim it, representing the witch as a self-sought identity that both empowers and politicizes its bearer. Each woman photographed for Major Arcana (including genderfluid and trans individuals) pursues a form of witchcraft, whether aligned with a religion (like Wicca or Voudou) or a self-defined practice. No two individuals inhabit the term ‘witch’ in quite the same way, but many consider themselves pagan, and engage in a diversity of traditions, including: mysticism, engagement with the occult, politically-oriented activism, polytheism, ritualized ‘spell-craft,’ and plant-based healing. Among those included in the series are self-proclaimed green witches, white witches, kitchen witches...

Increasingly heralded for his influence, Slim Aarons (1916-2006) made a career out of photographing "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." Aarons is known for his iconic images of Hollywood glamour and luxurious people, places and lifestyles. Undercurrent Projects offers premium quality photographic prints from the Slim Aarons Archive, owned and housed by Getty Images. All photographs are printed and authorized by the Getty Images Gallery, London. Photographs are printed utilizing the original transparency held at the archive source. Though he earned a Purple Heart for his service, he declared that combat had taught him that the only beach worth landing on was decorated with beautiful people enjoying themselves in the sun. Slim Aarons is noted for his documentation of the Beautiful People over 50 years, encompassing high society, celebrity, aristocracy, and the jet set. He was born and raised in New York City and New Jersey and later New Hampshire. He took up photography as a teenager. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was later appointed official photographer at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During World War II he served as an army combat photographer for Yank magazine in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. After the war he became a freelance photojournalist, first based in Hollywood, then Rome, then New York. His photographs appeared in many magazines, including Life, Holiday, Town & Country, Look, Venture, and Travel & Leisure. His first book A Wonderful Time (1974) is considered a classic. Slide show includes a close-up of the Slim Aarons estate's stamp. The Slim Aarons Estate has released the limited Estate edition as a Lambda print, which is a modern c-type prints.
