Although it has endured many scuffs and indignities, this extremely rare Art Deco box still charms, the figures on its lid playing the violin and dancing to the old children's tune of "Sur le Pont D'Avignon." The ancient bridge in Avignon, Provence has been the subject of song since the 16th century, but the song that is beloved today was first published in the mid-19th century. Here, the artist depicts a central fiddler flanked by two couples with elongated limbs, wide-brimmed hats and elegant dress. The sides of the box depict the wide arches of the bridge, with fish swimming in the water below. ARTIST
Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.

A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts.
