"Golden Youth", Gilded Sculpture of Young Man's Head by Lundqvist, Sweden

About the Item

This strong, placid visage of a young man, eyes closed and hair flowing, was sculpted by John Lundqvist, sometimes compared to Carl Milles, who was Sweden's leading sculptor in the early 20th century. Lundqvist has given his subject a rich, gilded finish, and mounted him on a block of stained oak. Lundqvist worked with Christian Eriksson between 1907 and 1913, but later he studied in France, Italy and Denmark, strongly influenced by the naturalistic sculpture of Auguste Rodin. Like Milles, Lundqvist executed a number of public monuments and memorials, including the Resurrection Monument, or Uppståndelse, a bronze sculptural group erected at Forest Cemetery in Stockholm, in the middle of Monument Hall outside the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This piece is gilded plaster, and is signed along the lower edge.
