"Female Head, " Fabulous Lucite Sculpture by Susan Bush

About the Item

A remarkable and rare work by Susan Bush from the 1970s, this piece, to quote the artist, "is very archetypal and the carved forms of the head and hair are as important as the facial features. These sculptures are meant to be timeless, ageless and "silent" although containing strong internal emotions and external forms meant to resonate as music does in our heads and create a perfect balance of form and aesthetic response." Bush's monoprints and other work has been collected by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan In NY, the New York Public Library, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of National Art of the Smithsonian. The creative process for this piece started with a sculpture in porcelain, the making of an exterior plaster mother mold, and then creating an interior silicone mild mastered casting in acylic resin. As Bush says, "the challenge is to avoid internal cracking from heat generated during the curing process and avoid missing areas due to air bubbles being trapped at high points on the face. The very deep undercuts require careful and thoughtful work in the highest quality Dow silicone in order to be able to remove a head from the mold (particularly difficult in casting a wax where the pressure of removing the mold can crush the wax undercuts)."

A brilliant example of early French cubist sculpture, this depiction of an African drummer, her hands beating the two-sided drum and her head looking up as she sings or chants to the music, illustrates the fractured, reinvented reality that Picasso and Braque invented just ten or twenty years before. The abstracted breasts of the figure bring to mind the mature Cubism of Ossip Zadkine, Jean Souverbie...
