"Black Man with Banjo, " Rare Example of Social Realist Sculpture by Shearwater
About the Item
Clearly influenced by the affectionate depictions of working Americans in the Midwest and the South by Social Realists such as Thomas Hart Benton and James Daugherty, this rare sculpture of a Black male figure with banjo was produced by the Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. This may have been conceived by Walter Anderson, who is best known for his superb series of watercolor paintings depicting birds and animals along the Gulf Coast, but he also collaborated with his brothers in creating ceramic pieces for Shearwater. Anderson created molds for twenty pirate figures, forty seven African American figures, several football players, and fairy tale figures.
