Cornelia Schulz (b. 1936) lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. For close to 50 years she has honed her skills in abstract paintings of complex shape and color. Her early education in the arts began at the Los Angeles County Art Institute in 1954 through 1957, the heyday of the California Ceramics Revolution. She studied sculpture in clay and wood with Renzo Fenci (1914 – 1999), and drawing from Herbert Jepson (1908 –1993). She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting (1959) and her Master of Fine Arts in welded steel sculpture (1961) from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).

This is my interpretation of a section of the American River near my home. I tried to convey the feeling of peace that I get when walking in this area with the ducks and birds for company. I added the path for a little sense of mystery as to what we might see in those trees beyond the river. I created this piece on Ampersand Pastelbord and it will need framing for display.

Pastel artist Patricia Prendergast creates impressionist artworks that depict the rivers and landscapes near her home in Sacramento, California. With each nature vignette, she captures the sense of larger natural rhythms through quick mark-making, mauve undertones, and a tranquil and serene haziness. Her work recalls the paintings from the Hudson River School such as Thomas Cole and Asher Brown Durand. Before working on her pastels at home in her studio, she spends hours studying nature on walks along the river near her home. Since becoming an artist, she says “everything is more vivid - the beauty of light and shadow in the trees, the subtlety of the color of clouds, the sparkle and reflections in water.” Her work as been exhibited in solo shows around California. Daniel Stookey Lutz was born in Decatur, Illinois on July 7, 1906 to Florence Stookey and Samuel Milton Lutz, who owned a music store in Decatur. His father was a noted violinist and his mother a fine watercolorist and occasional painter. He came of age in the 20s but he matured, as the country did, under the pressures of the Great Depression. He was twenty-three when the stock market fell in the fall of 1929. Fortunately for Lutz, he had already commenced his studies at Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) when the panic of Black Thursday occurred.

Hernando Vines Soto was the Son of a French engineer of Catalan origin and Maria Soto (daughter of a former president of Honduras and a native Guatemalan), and nephew of the pianist Ricardo Viñes . With the outbreak of World War I , the Viñes leave Paris and after visiting several points of the French geography, settle in Madrid . When he returned to Paris in 1919 , he presented his works to Picasso,who advised him to enter the Academy of Sacred Art founded by Maurice Denis and George Desvallières.. Later, he also attended André Lhote's classes and worked in the studio of Gino Severini . In 1922 , he visited the Monastery of Silos with his father.

I painted this from a photo I took at Stafford Lake on a cloudy, rainy day. As I worked on it, it started to feel like a night scene to me and I thought it would be fun to add the moon and its reflection. I like how it provides a counter point in this monochromatic design.

When the vineyards are showing off reds and golds during the early months of autumn, I head out to stand in the midst of them at my easel. This painting was done in the Livermore Valley wine country where the charming house nestled amongst the lively vines grabbed my attention. I am drawing the viewer's attention to the house by softening the edges of the painting.
About the Artist
Impressionist Catherine McCargar expresses her deep admiration of nature through landscape paintings of Northern California. While she is well-versed in a range of media, her preferred medium for painting is watercolor. The fluidity of the paint allows her to capture the muted undertones and the fleeting light found in the natural world. About the artist:
After getting his BA and MA in fine art at the University of Wisconsin, Richard Royce went to France to study with Stanley W. Hayter, On returning to the US he opened a studio where he produced etchings, cast paper, paintings and sculptural commissions of his own work while at the same time helping other artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Francoise Gilot and Jim Rosenquist to realize works in various media.
