About the artist.
Alexander Bercovitch was born in Kherson, Russia in 1891. In 1926 he moved to Montreal, Canada. He is known for a vibrant, expressionist painting style. His landscapes also show the strong influence of impressionism. His mediums are pastel, gouache, watercolour and oil. As a child he apprenticing in icon-painting with monks. He also studied at Jerusalem's Art School of Bezalel, the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, and the Bakst-Dobujiinsky school and Stiglitz Academy, both in St. Petersburg. He worked in Odessa and Moscow painting stage decorations, before moving to Turkestan to teach art. He was influenced by the German Symbolist Franz von Stuck, as well as David Burliuk, co-founder of the Russian Primitivist movement and Wassily Kandinsky. After moving to Montreal he worked in decorative painting and set design. In 1927 he participated in the annual Spring Show of the Art Association of Montreal, and in 1933 held his first solo exhibition. A native of Syracuse, John E. De Tore was born in 1902.
DeTore enjoyed painting continuously since the age of 8. Although he became an engineer with the Niagara Mohawk Power corporation he carried on elective training in the required branches of art.
He took seriously to the watercolor medium from 1940 and by 1955 he was well known for his decisively composed watercolor landscapes and their rich, deep chromatics - earning him acknowledgment in the American Artist Magazine November 1961 issue.

Cornelia Schulz (b. 1936) lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. For close to 50 years she has honed her skills in abstract paintings of complex shape and color. Her early education in the arts began at the Los Angeles County Art Institute in 1954 through 1957, the heyday of the California Ceramics Revolution. She studied sculpture in clay and wood with Renzo Fenci (1914 – 1999), and drawing from Herbert Jepson (1908 –1993). She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting (1959) and her Master of Fine Arts in welded steel sculpture (1961) from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).

Wayne Ensrud was born in Minnesota where he received his BFA from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. As a student he met Oskar Kokoschka, the artist-in-residence at the Institute, who profoundly influenced Ensrud's work and has remained his friend and mentor ever since.
When Pablo Casals conducted his Master Class Series at Berkeley. Wayne Ensrud had the honor ot being invited to execute drawings of the great cellist during those sessions. and this year when the New York Chamber Society celebrated its 10th anniversary.Ensrud was asked to sit in on rehearsals and sketch the world famous violinists ltzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. Actress Jayne Mansfield, novelist Alex Waugh, wine connoisseur Alexis Lichine are among others who have been portrayed by Ensrud.
Mr. Ensrud has been a free-lance art director and animator for ABC, CBS, and IRM IBM contracted him to he the series, "Computer and the Mind of Man", which has been translated into 18 languages and won several international awards. For ABC he created the film animations for the Gemini Space Programs. He taught film animation at Pratt Institute for tour years. Jake Lee is emerging as the visual chronicler of the Chinese American past, especially the daily life in San Francisco Chinatown. No other artist, of any background, has presented that history as richly and as evocatively as Lee did in his many, striking compositions. Completed over a lifetime of work, Lee's paintings of historical sites, moments, and experiences give us an artistic vision.
For much of his life, Lee was known primarily as a commercial artist who completed arresting illustrations for travel magazines, greeting cards, and book jackets. He was an art teacher, with many students who learned the use of water-soluble pigments to depict the many landscapes of mid-20th century California. Less well-known were his representations of the many places historically linked to the Chinese of the state and the West. To this day, few in America know about Chinese work in the fisheries, in the early wine industry, in 19th century urban industry, and in the colorful cultural life of San Francisco in the years before the Great Earthquake. At a time when most Americans thought Chinese Americans had just been laundrymen, houseboys, or Charlie Chan, characters they saw on television.

About the artist.
Jean Target was born in France in 1910. From a very young age early on, he was impassioned by the two forms of art that would remain the focal point of his career for all his life: visual arts and performing arts. In the 30s and 40s, as a young man, Jean Target frequented the Parisian theaters and cabarets, just like his role model, the famous impressionist painter Toulouse Lautrec, did at the end of the 19th century. Jean became friends with many performers and captured many formal as well as candid depictions. He gained exclusive access and used this privilege to create art with unparalleled perspective as an insider to the seedy, dark, yet glamorous underworld of Parisian cabaret. He drew the dancers on-site, capturing the dancer’s movements in his immediately recognizable signature style. In the 40s and 50s, he continued his artistic career, gaining recognition among collectors in France and all over Europe. His work depicting the Parisian performing art scene captures the feeling and history of the the theater and golden age of cabaret in Paris. Jean Target continued to draw, paint and sculpt until his death in 1997. The work of Jean Target is held in collections and museums worldwide including the world renowned Victoria And Albert Museum in London.

Serge Golovine, a star of the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas in the 1950's who was considered one of the most brilliant dancers of his generation. As popular as Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov in later years, Mr. Golovine was known for the airborne quality, lightness and virtuosity of his dancing. His best-known roles were the Blue Bird in ''The Sleeping Beauty,'' where the articulation and elegance of his footwork were seen to their best advantage, and the title role of ''Le Spectre de la Rose.'' He was also greatly praised for his poignant portrayal of Petrouchka, which he danced at the Paris Opera in the 1970's. Mr. Golovine was a leading teacher at the ballet school at the Paris Opera from 1981 to 1997. He stood out for the gentleness and quiet wit of his teaching in master classes last summer at the New York University School of Education, where he was a guest professor with his wife, Claude Bessy, the director of the Paris Opera Ballet School. Mr. Golovine, born in Monte Carlo, was one of three siblings who became noted dancers. (His sister, Solange, died several years ago. George Goviloff, a brother, is now the director of the Theatre de la Danse in Avignon.) He began his training in Nice with Julie Sedova, a former Maryinsky dancer, followed by studies with Gustave Ricaux at the Paris Opera. Mr. Golovine made his professional debut at 17 with the Nouveaux Ballets de Monte Carlo, a refuge for dancers reluctant to perform in Paris during the German occupation. He joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 but left in 1950 to join the de Cuevas company. During his years with the troupe, which he left in 1962, Mr. Golovine created the role of Iphias in John Taras's ''Piege de Lumiere.'' His repertory also included the ''Black Swan'' pas de deux from ''Swan Lake,'' ''Les Sylphides'' and the lead male roles in ''Giselle'' and the Bournonville production of ''La Sylphide.'' He effectively retired from the stage in 1964, when he joined the Geneva Ballet as its resident choreographer and ballet master through 1968. Mr. Golovine's best-known ballets were ''Feu Rouge, Feu Vert'' and ''La Mort de Narcisse.'' He was considered an expert in the staging of ballets from the 20th-century Russian repertory. Figurative artist Larry Rivers was born in the Bronx in 1923 to Ukrainian Jewish parents, and was named Yitzak Loiza Grossberg. Rivers belonged to the second generation of the New York School of painters, although unlike most of his contemporaries he stayed away from abstraction instead preferring narrative paintings.
Rivers attended Hans Hofmann's school for nearly two years. In 1949, he had his first solo show at the Jane Street Gallery, an artist's co-op in the Village. Rivers received favorable reviews and was invited to join the Tibor de Nagy...

About the artist.
Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock.
He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations.
Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him.
Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes.
He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others.
