About the artist:
Kananginak Pootoogook was an Inuit sculptor and printmaker who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, in Canada. He died as a result of complications related to surgery for lung cancer.
Pootoogook was born at a traditional Inuit camp called Ikerasak, near Cape Dorset, Nunavut (then in the Northwest Territories) to Josephie Pootoogook, leader of the camp, and Sarah Ningeokuluk. The family lived a traditional lifestyle hunting and trapping while living in an iglu in the winter and a sod house in the summer and did not move into their first southern style house until 1942. In 1957 Pootoogook married Shooyoo, moved to Cape Dorset and began work for James Houston.
Originally, Pootoogook did some carving, made prints and lithographs for other artists. At the same time he was a leader in setting up the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, the first Inuit owned co-op, now part of the Arctic Co-operatives Limited and served from 1959 until 1964 as the president. Although Kananginak had worked with his father, Josephie, in 1959, it was not until the 1970s that Kananginak began work as a full-time artist producing drawings, carvings and prints. According to Terry Ryan, former Co-op manager, Pootoogook was both influenced by and an admirer of the works of his uncle, photographer and historian Peter Pitseolak.
The World Wildlife Commission released a limited edition set in 1977 that included four of Pootoogook's images and in 1980 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1997 Pootoogook built a 6 ft (1.8 m) inukshuk in Cape Dorset for former Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc. The inukshuk was dismantled and shipped to Ottawa and with the assistance of his son, Johnny, it was rebuilt at Rideau Hall and unveiled on 21 June, National Aboriginal Day.
Pootoogook had several exhibitions and showings of his work. In 2010, he went to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics and to open a showing of his work at the Marion Scott Gallery. He also had a showing of his work, his first solo exhibition at a public institution, at the Museum of Inuit Art in Toronto from February to May 2010. He also received a 2010 National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the arts category from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation.
While working on his final, and unfinished, drawing of a Peterhead owned by his father, he was struck by coughing spells, which he declared was cancer. Along with his wife, Shooyoo, he flew to Ottawa, staying at the Larga Baffin home, and was diagnosed with lung cancer. In October 2010, he underwent surgery and did not recover. He died 23 November 2010 in Ottawa. This lithograph is from the notable portfolio “10 West Coast Artists” containing ten prints, title page and colophon page, published by Collector’s Press in San Francisco in 1967. Prints by Keith Boyle, Bruce Conner, Richard Diebenkorn, Roy de Forest, Sidney Gordin, Frank Lobdell, James Melchert, Manuel Neri, Frank Ruvolo, Peter Voulkos are in the portfolio. The print has no margins – it is full bleed. The print is in excellent condition.
Felix Ruvolo was born in New York City in 1912, but raised in the home of his grandparents in Sicily where he first studied with an Italian artist. At age 12, he returned to the home of his parents, who soon moved to Chicago. They were aware of his intense interest in art and had him continue studies with a local artist and then at the Chicago Art Institute.
By 1938 he was exhibiting regularly and was accorded his first invitation to participate in an American Federation of Arts traveling exhibition. Invitations to exhibitions at other major institutions followed--the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Carnegie Institute, the Phillips Gallery Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Walker Art Center, the “Contemporary American Painting” surveys at the Krannert Museum from 1948 to 1961, the Sao Paulo Biennials in Brazil, the Galerie Creuse in Paris. He was represented in the ground-breaking exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951, “Abstract Painting and Sculpture in America.”
His many one-man shows included those at the Durand Ruel Gallery, the Catherine Viviano Gallery, the Grand Central, the Poindexter Gallery in New York and the University of Southern California. His works entered public and private collections such as the Chicago Art Institute, the Krannert Museum, the Walker Art Center, the Oakland Museum of Art, and the Aukland City Museum in New Zealand. His work was reproduced in national magazines and in anthologies published by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and Albright Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, the American Encyclopedia, the Dictionaire de la Peinture Abstraite, and Il Giornale D'Italia.
His teaching career began at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1945 and continued until 1948 when he moved with his wife Mardi to New York. Mills College in Oakland had established a program of bringing distinguished artists, such as Fernand Leger, to the campus as guest instructors. Felix was invited for the summer session of 1948; during that sojourn, he had solo exhibitions in the Mills College Art Gallery and at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. At that time, he met many Bay Area artists who were to become life-long friends of the Ruvolos.
His national reputation had been firmly established, when in 1949 Felix was extended the invitation for appointment to the faculty on the Berkeley campus.
His earlier works were referential, often on fantasy themes. These new paintings were non-objective in idiom, rich in color, line and texture. They were marvelous, they were beautiful, they bespoke his creative genius. Critics came, collectors came, colleagues came, students came, friends from the East came. Artists were invited to serve
as visiting faculty. George McNeil, then Director of the Pratt Institute, said that he accepted an invitation to come to Berkeley because Felix was there.

A native of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, Rufino Tamayo's father was a shoemaker, and his mother a seamstress. Some accounts state that he was descended from Zapotec Indians, but he was actually 'mestizo' - of mixed indigenous/European ancestry. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). He began painting at age 11. Orphaned at the age of 12, Tamayo moved to Mexico City, where he was raised by his maternal aunt who owned a wholesale fruit business.
In 1917, he entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, but left soon after to pursue independent study. Four years later, Tamayo was appointed the head designer of the department of ethnographic drawings at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City. Bruce Weinberg (1942-1994) studied Interior Design at the Philadelphia College of Art and Architectural Space Planning at Temple University. Born at Ramsgate, Kent on 12 July 1876, Winifred Austen only daughter of Josiah Austin, a Cornish naval surgeon, and his wife Fanny, née Mann. She amended the spelling of her surname from Austin to Austen from the time that she began to exhibit.
In 1892 the family moved to Hornsey, London from where Austin attended the London County Council School of Arts and Crafts, studying under Cuthbert Swan, an animal painter. I n 1899 Austen exhibited a picture of a lion at the Royal Academy and in all exhibited more than seventy pictures at the Academy, the last in 1961.

About the artist:
Born in 1951 in Dernbach, West Germany, Jurgen Gorg has established himself as a master craftsman and consummate artist. His etchings and lithographs reflect his innate talent and imagination. He studied visual arts first, in Koblenz, Germany and later, at the Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
Gorg began his professional career in 1977 as an artist and printmaker and by 1980, was awarded a special painting prize by the district of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1985, a catalog raisonne was published of Gorg's creations. Gorg's work follows a strong tradition of figurative art with erotic overtones.
He interprets his subject matter loosely, keeping his figures open and emphasizing motion through line and contour. A foreword in a book on Gorg's work captures his artistic sensibility: "The predominant subject is the human body: it is the body of a young, slim, beautiful person. This print is by Billy Al Bengston. It depicts what looks like a coyote staring out at the horizon on a full moon night. This print was created at the same time Bengston was creating his Moon paintings. The print has dark colors. As a result, my photographs are imperfect; they have a bit of glare. The print is in excellent condition. It is attached by two hinges to a matboard measuring 26 x 32 inches and has a Plexiglas frame. The frame is in fair condition with some light scratches.
Billy Al Bengston (June 7, 1934 – October 8, 2022) was an American visual artist and sculptor who lived and worked in Venice, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. Bengston was probably best known for work he created that reflected California's "Kustom" car and motorcycle culture. He pioneered the use of sprayed layers of automobile lacquer in fine art and often used colors that were psychedelic and shapes that were mandala-like. ARTnews referred to Bengston as a "giant of Los Angeles's postwar art scene."
Early life and education
Bengston was born in Dodge City, Kansas, on June 7, 1934. His family relocated to Los Angeles in 1948. He attended Los Angeles City College in 1952. Subsequently, he studied painting under Richard Diebenkorn and Saburo Hasegawa at the California College of Arts and Crafts, in Oakland, California, in 1955 and returned to Los Angeles to study at Otis Art Institute in 1956.
Career
Bengston began showing with the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles (founded and run by Walter Hopps and Edward Kienholz, and later Irving Blum), having five shows between 1958 and 1963. As a fixture at the gallery, he was among a cohort of artists that included Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Kenneth Price, Ed Moses, and Robert Irwin. (The gallery closed in 1966.) In a 2018 article in Vanity Fair, Bengston recalled that he and Irwin hung the 32 pieces in Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup-can paintings show at Ferus in 1962. He notably described the atmosphere of Ferus as a "macho intellectual gang bang".
After seeing the work of Jasper Johns at the 1958 Venice Biennale he adopted the motif of a set of sergeant's stripes. This recurring chevron image was painted with industrial materials and techniques associated with the decoration of motorcycle fuel tanks and surfboards. According to Grace Glueck of The New York Times, Bengston "was among the first to ditch traditional oil paint on canvas, opting instead for sprayed layers of automobile lacquer on aluminum in soft colors, achieving a highly reflective, translucent surface."
Bengston encouraged viewers in the early 1960s to associate his art with motorcycle subculture; on the cover of a 1961 catalogue for a Ferus show, he was seen straddling a motorcycle. (He also competed in motocross competitions.) "When I painted these motorcycle paintings...

Coming from a very western tradition in Wyoming, John Maxon developed an expansive view of nature. Moving eventually to the San Francisco Bay area, John's delight in the effects of light and color led him to the decision to become an artist at the young age of 15. His natural ability was encouraged, and at 16 he began figurative art classes with Howard Brodie, the artist well known for his WWII correspondence, drawings and the Watergate trial drawings.

This exceptional color lithograph is an excellent example of Stanley William Hayter’s iconic printmaking. He is the founder of Atelier 17, and as such, one of the most influential printmakers of the 20th century. Volubilis was published in 1969, and is B&M 331 in the catalog raisonne. The print is in good condition aside from soft handling creases, stray printing ink in the lower right corner, 6 in. surface rub upper left corner which is barely visible upon very close inspection.
