About the artist: Jenny Okun is an American artist and filmmaker who travels the world in search of unusual beauty. Her artworks have been shown in more than sixty international exhibitions and in numerous private and public collections. Commissions have included the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Tate Modern, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Craig Krull describes her artwork as “large-scale color photographic abstractions. About the artist: Michael Todd White (born October 10, 1969, in San Antonio, Texas) is a figurative expressionist painter.[1] He has also been described as an avant-garde expressionist. White was named the official artist for the Grammy Awards by the Recording Academy in 2007. His painting appeared on the ceremony's invitation and program book and served as the official image for the event. His work was featured in the Inspirations of Oz Fine Art Collection, an exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz. His etchings and lithographs reflect his innate talent and imagination. He studied visual arts first, in Koblenz, Germany and later, at the Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Gorg began his professional career in 1977 as an artist and printmaker and by 1980, was awarded a special painting prize by the district of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1985, a catalog raisonne was published of Gorg's creations. Gorg's work follows a strong tradition of figurative art with erotic overtones. He interprets his subject matter loosely, keeping his figures open and emphasizing motion through line and contour. Description: From the suite "The Mother of All Us" About the artist: Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His family name was Clark but he adopted the name of his native state early in his career. His father worked for a Phillips 66 gas station and his mother ran a diner. He began his studies in art in 1945 at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and then at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. He then moved to Chicago and continued his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied at the Skowhgan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, eventually moving to New York City in 1956. A major Pop Artist, his work is characterized by the use of words and relatively flat paint with no brush strokes. This cold and somewhat mechanical approach to painting in which the words are often stenciled into the design probably was influenced by street signs, pinball machines, the commercial stenciling process used in printing and advertisements. In fact, Indiana calls himself "a painter of signs". He uses the common everyday symbols and words of America and paints them as brilliantly colored pop art paintings. His work comments in an ironic fashion on American life and culture, often making pointed political statements about American society. The words in his painting are usually simple and short words, sometimes with clear meaning and other times arranged in an ambiguous fashion to project multiple meanings, and occasionally involve puns. It is interesting to try to put his "words" together to get a sense of the meaning. For instance, in The Triumph of Tira, painted in, 1960-61, the artist presents four circles with four squares inside them and four stars inside the squares. There is one word in each star. The upper left says "Law"; the upper right says "Cat"; the lower left says "Men"; and the lower right says "Sex." Of course it is hard to understand the relationship between the words, and as you begin to speculate on what it might mean, a number of possible interpretations evolve. Other works have more obvious meanings, sometimes political. One painting shows an outline of the State of Alabama with Selma marked in the right location. The words "Just as in the anatomy of man, every nation must have its hind part", are stenciled around the map. This is a reference to the march on Selma, which was an important event in the Civil Rights Movement during the 60's. Indiana's most famous painting is of the word "Love". Description: From the suite "The Mother of All Us" About the artist: Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His family name was Clark but he adopted the name of his native state early in his career. His father worked for a Phillips 66 gas station and his mother ran a diner. He began his studies in art in 1945 at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and then at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. He then moved to Chicago and continued his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied at the Skowhgan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Edinburgh College of Art and London University, eventually moving to New York City in 1956. A major Pop Artist, his work is characterized by the use of words and relatively flat paint with no brush strokes. This cold and somewhat mechanical approach to painting in which the words are often stenciled into the design probably was influenced by street signs, pinball machines, the commercial stenciling process used in printing and advertisements. In fact, Indiana calls himself "a painter of signs". He uses the common everyday symbols and words of America and paints them as brilliantly colored pop art paintings. His work comments in an ironic fashion on American life and culture, often making pointed political statements about American society. The words in his painting are usually simple and short words, sometimes with clear meaning and other times arranged in an ambiguous fashion to project multiple meanings, and occasionally involve puns. It is interesting to try to put his "words" together to get a sense of the meaning. For instance, in The Triumph of Tira, painted in, 1960-61, the artist presents four circles with four squares inside them and four stars inside the squares. There is one word in each star. The upper left says "Law"; the upper right says "Cat"; the lower left says "Men"; and the lower right says "Sex." Of course it is hard to understand the relationship between the words, and as you begin to speculate on what it might mean, a number of possible interpretations evolve. Other works have more obvious meanings, sometimes political. One painting shows an outline of the State of Alabama with Selma marked in the right location. The words "Just as in the anatomy of man, every nation must have its hind part", are stenciled around the map. This is a reference to the march on Selma, which was an important event in the Civil Rights Movement during the 60's. Indiana's most famous painting is of the word "Love". It is hand signed, dated, titled, located, described and numbered 31/50 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 22 x 15.5 inches, sheet size is 30 x 22.5 inches, framed size is 39.5 x 31.5 inches. Custom framed in a dark wood frame, with off white backing. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame has minor restorations and very light dents, barely visible. About the artist: Kananginak Pootoogook was an Inuit sculptor and printmaker who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, in Canada. He died as a result of complications related to surgery for lung cancer. Pootoogook was born at a traditional Inuit camp called Ikerasak, near Cape Dorset, Nunavut (then in the Northwest Territories) to Josephie Pootoogook, leader of the camp, and Sarah Ningeokuluk. The family lived a traditional lifestyle hunting and trapping while living in an iglu in the winter and a sod house in the summer and did not move into their first southern style house until 1942. In 1957 Pootoogook married Shooyoo, moved to Cape Dorset and began work for James Houston. Originally, Pootoogook did some carving, made prints and lithographs for other artists. At the same time he was a leader in setting up the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, the first Inuit owned co-op, now part of the Arctic Co-operatives Limited and served from 1959 until 1964 as the president. Although Kananginak had worked with his father, Josephie, in 1959, it was not until the 1970s that Kananginak began work as a full-time artist producing drawings, carvings and prints. According to Terry Ryan, former Co-op manager, Pootoogook was both influenced by and an admirer of the works of his uncle, photographer and historian Peter Pitseolak. The World Wildlife Commission released a limited edition set in 1977 that included four of Pootoogook's images and in 1980 he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1997 Pootoogook built a 6 ft (1.8 m) inukshuk in Cape Dorset for former Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc. The inukshuk was dismantled and shipped to Ottawa and with the assistance of his son, Johnny, it was rebuilt at Rideau Hall and unveiled on 21 June, National Aboriginal Day. Pootoogook had several exhibitions and showings of his work. In 2010, he went to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics and to open a showing of his work at the Marion Scott Gallery. He also had a showing of his work, his first solo exhibition at a public institution, at the Museum of Inuit Art in Toronto from February to May 2010. He also received a 2010 National Aboriginal Achievement Award in the arts category from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation. While working on his final, and unfinished, drawing of a Peterhead owned by his father, he was struck by coughing spells, which he declared was cancer. Along with his wife, Shooyoo, he flew to Ottawa, staying at the Larga Baffin home, and was diagnosed with lung cancer. In October 2010, he underwent surgery and did not recover. From 1926 he attended evening courses at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja" taught by Félix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Angel Ferrant. Mongrell found Clavé a place as a house painter's apprentice in 1927 because Clavé was fascinated by the hands-on side of painting and especially by the materials used for such work and wanted to learn how to prepare paints. During the Spanish Civil War Clavé served as a draughtsman for the Republican government, but at the end of the war. he fled to France. After internment at Les Haras camp in Perpignan, Clavé settled in Paris in 1939, drawing comics and working as an illustrator. During the 1940s Clavé's painting showed the stylistic influence of Bonnard, Vuillard, Rouault and especially Picasso, with whom he became acquainted in 1944. From 1946 Clavé did numerous designs for ballet and theatre in Paris, Munich, London and New York; in the 1950s he turned to book illustration. In 1954 Clavé ceased working as a stage-set designer and illustrator to devote himself entirely to painting, visiting Spain again. At age three Bufano's family brought him to NYC where he spent his childhood and was educated by private tutors. He studied at the ASL in NYC from 1913-15, the pupil of James L. Fraser, Herbert Adams, and Paul Manship. He came to San Francisco in 1915 to work on a sculpture for the PPIE. For awhile he worked in the studio of coppersmith Dirk van Erp. He then traveled extensively for four years in France, Italy, India, and China. After returning to San Francisco in 1921, he remained there the rest of his life except for visits to the Orient and Europe. Always a radical, he lost his teaching position at San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 because he was too modern for the conservative faculty. He later taught at UC Berkeley and the CCAC (1964-65). Henry Miller wrote of him, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence." His work, simple in style and monumental in scale, includes smoothly rounded animals in granite and icons sheathed in stainless steel. About the artist: Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin RBA (28 April 1870 - 6 January 1935) was a British artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and sketches of animals, sports, and rural life. Born in Slough, he was educated at Eastbourne College and Solihull Grammar School. He studied anatomy at South Kensington and animal painting under William Frank Calderon. He lived at The Abbots, Sulhamstead Abbots from 1913 to 1914 and was church warden of St Mary's church. Early influences included Randolph Caldecott and John Leech. His drawings first made their way into print in The Building News of 12 September 1890, and began to appear throughout many popular journals and magazines; his work was published in The Graphic in 1891. His illustrations include two of the original 1894 magazine publications of stories from Rudyard Kipling's The Second Jungle Book, the 1910 edition of Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers and The Bunch Book (1932, about Bunch, a Sealyham Terrier) by James Douglas. He also published a short series of fully illustrated books in 1923, Old Manor Houses and Old Inns. His village scenes and rural buildings were executed in chalk, pencil and wash sketching was used for country scenes. Aldin was an enthusiastic sportsman and a Master of Fox Hounds and many of his pictures illustrated hunting. An early work on a tiger in a zoo was studied from life, but found to be a copyright of the ideas in a photograph by Gambier Bolton. A popular book by Aldin was Sleeping Partners, a sequence of pastel drawings of his dogs on a couch. It included his Irish Wolfhound Micky and his favorite model, Cracker, a Bull Terrier with a dark patch over one eye. He also did some work for Cadburys advertising. Born 28 April 1870. He was educated at Eastbourne College then Solihull Grammar School. Cecil Aldin's father was a keen amateur artist so Cecil started drawing at a very young age. He studied art at the studio of Albert Moore and then the National Art Training School which later became The Royal College of Art.
