The subject of this painting is Angelica, a princess from the epic chivalric romances of the Italian Renaissance. She first appears in Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato (1483) and reappears famously in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1532). In these poems – part of the Matter of France cycle of Charlemagne and his paladins – Angelica’s extraordinary beauty ensnares many knights, including Orlando (Roland) and his cousin Rinaldo, sparking rivalries and adventures. Ariosto’s narrative particularly highlights Angelica’s tumultuous journey: at one point she is stripped and chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster (a scene mirroring the myth of Andromeda) before being dramatically rescued by the valiant knight Ruggiero on his winged horse. Ultimately, however, Angelica chooses her own destiny. She falls in love with a humble Saracen soldier, Medoro, whom she nurses back to health, and she returns with him to her far-off Asian kingdom – an affair that drives the heartbroken Orlando to madness. This independent resolution (marrying outside the circle of Christian knights) made Angelica an emblem of feminine agency and romantic idealism in Renaissance literature. Her story remained popular in art and literature through the centuries, symbolizing the allure and elusiveness of love.

The work of Antonio de Felipe is a constant source of fascination and surprises. It is a great pleasure to witness how the artist’s inge-nious world of ideas and his sense of humour are constantly evolving. Antonio de Felipe was born in Valencia in 1965. Ever since a very young age he has felt an artistic drive that led him to earn a fine arts degree at the University of Valencia. During his studies he worked as a creative designer in an advertising agency which undoubtedly influenced what would be his future pictorial style. In 1996 he moved to Madrid where he has his studio. Antonio de Felipe has developed his extensive work in different series. His subject worlds form a surprising genre blend, a linking of series characters, classical art and commercialism side by side with contemporary icon worship. His motifs are often painted in constellations that pay homage to great artists, including Velázquez, Picasso, Mondrian and others. Many of his works exhibit an ingenious ability to express powerful paradoxes. One example of this can be seen in the paraphrase on Diego Velázquez famous Las Meninas (Spanish for The Maids of Honour), painted in 1656. Instead of the glass of cold, perfumed water in the original, Antonio de Felipe places a Fanta soft drink in the hand of the young Spanish princess Margarita. The painting is part of the series LOGOTIPOS (logos) devoted to the world of art and advertising. This series was followed by VACAS (cows), with paintings such as Vaca Vogue, a pink cow on the cover of a Vogue magazine. Then, CINEMASPOP where actors like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn among others were revived as pop icons, with well-known creations such as Black Audrey. In 2009 Antonio de Felipe presented POPSPORT in which the artist mixes the world of sport with cartoons and art history, uch as in La carrera where Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon are participating in a run at a stadium. His pictures are an artistic epicentre where lines, letters and numbers meld with vigorous swashes of colour.” That is how the writer Johan Persson has described the artist’s paintings. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. The Artist: Ture Ander (1881-1959)
Ture Ander, Also known as "Blomstermålaren" (The Flower Painter), was born on September 17, 1881, in Asker, Örebro County, and passed away on February 4, 1959, in Arvika, Värmland. Initially trained in the craft of painting, Ander pursued formal art education at the Technical School in Stockholm from 1898 to 1903. He further honed his skills at the Artist’s Association School between 1905 and 1908 and at the Académie Colarossi in Paris during 1911-1912. Here, he was significantly influenced by Paul Cézanne and other Impressionists.

This finely executed plein air landscape depicts the monumental bridge of Ariccia and the town with the surrounding Alban Hills, painted by German landscape artist Joachim Ludwig Heinrich Daniel Bünsow (born 1821 in Kiel, died 1910 in the same city). Executed in oil on paper mounted on cardboard, the work dates from his Italian period between 1853 and 1858. Not signed.
Bünsow received his artistic training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1839 to 1848, studying under Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. In 1844, the Copenhagen Art Association acquired his painting "Tellingstedt in Dithmarschen." Following his studies, he traveled to Dresden, where he became associated with the circle around Johan Christian Dahl. A scholarship from the Copenhagen Academy enabled Bünsow to reside in Rome from 1853 to 1858. During this period, his landscapes evolved from the finely toned, naturalistic style of his early work to more atmospheric and idealized compositions, influenced by Louis Gurlitt.
Bünsow's early works from his time in Copenhagen are characterized by fine tonality and naturalistic rendering, reflecting the style of his teacher Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. His Italian landscapes, however, exhibit a more atmospheric and idealized approach, influenced by Louis Gurlitt. Notably, Bünsow produced high-quality drawings during his time in Rome, some of which are preserved in the Kunsthalle zu Kiel.
Historical Context: The Ariccia Bridge
In the early 19th century, the local authorities sought to improve the Appian Way's safety and accessibility. The solution involved constructing bridges to span the Ariccia valley and adjacent ravines. In 1843, Pope Gregory XVI commissioned a six-arched bridge to address the elevation differences. Following his death in 1846, Pope Pius IX continued the project, entrusting architect Ireneo Aleandri with the design and Giuseppe Bertolini with the execution.
