Listening to Sinatra
By Peter Liepke
Located in Westwood, NJ
"Listening to Sinatra" is one of 36 featured works which make up the series Above & Beyond. This homage to New York City is an evocative tribute to Peter Liepke's adopted home town, the urban metropolis he chose over his native Minnesota. This is not just another group of photographs of obvious NYC landmarks in Manhattan. When the artist chooses to include an iconic structure, he presents a startling perspective, literally and figuratively. This ongoing portfolio is especially noteworthy for being inclusive of all five boroughs. By depicting scenes from everyday life that emphasize the human aspects of city life, the artist taps into our collective psyches for memorable moments personally experienced in the City that never sleeps. “For this series I wanted to go back and attempt to remember my feelings or first impressions upon arriving in New York City as an outsider for the first time, well over twenty years ago,” Liepke explains. But rather than the traditional love letter to the city, “the series is much more about breaking away and chasing a dream.” Each work, a misty scene...

B Train (from the series A Story of the New York Subway)
By Kazuo Sumida
Located in New York, NY
14 x 11 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...

You Can Have Whatever You Can Dream Of
By Guadalupe Laiz
Located in New York, NY
Ed. 2/12, signed on the recto, includes black frame. Guadalupe Laiz is an international artist, photographer and explorer born and raised in Argentina. Guadalupe’s main focus for the past ten years has been an extensive body of work capturing the beauty and uniqueness of the indigenous horses of Iceland, a country that has touched her deeply and continues to visit. Her work “Horses of Iceland” has been shown in exhibitions all over the world. This photograph is from her newest series "Among the Living." For this body of work, Laiz traveled across the African continent for six years, visiting Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Batswana, Rwanda, and Uganda. Forgoing comfort often for months at a time, she returned with intimate portraits of the charismatic and fierce, yet vulnerable and endangered animals she encountered. It is impossible to look at one of her photographs and not feel her subject’s innate individuality. As part of her artistic process, she spends time with each animal up close in its natural habitat, gets to know...
