Copeland Plate, Reticulated, Sublime Flowers by Greatbatch, 1848 (3)
By Copeland
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful plate made by Copeland in 1848. It is decorated with a sublimely painted flower arrangement by the artist Greatbatch. We have two sets of 8 of these plates available, as well as a few more separate ones; please see separate listings. The Copeland factory was the third iteration of the famous Spode factory, after the "Copeland & Garrett" period which transitioned into the "Copeland" period in about 1833. The Spode/Copeland factory was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the late 1700s to the demise of the industry in the 1960s and ultimate closure in the early 21st Century. In fact it was the founder Josiah Spode who was responsible for the recipe for bone china that made English china production so successful in the two centuries to come. Throughout all the changes, their items have always remained of exceptionally high quality and many of the designs have become iconic. This plate was potted in fine white bone china, the rim meticulously reticulated in the "Gothic" shape. Reticulation was very time consuming and difficult, and just this detail would have made this plate expensive. The sublimely painted flower arrangement painted in the centre were done by Greatbatch, one of the well-known floral artists working for Copeland. Greatbatch was active between 1845 and 1860, and worked together with his brother R. Greatbatch, who was a talented gilder. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. This plate would have belonged to a sublimely expensive dessert service. It is stamped with the small blue Copeland mark with interlocking C's, and painted in red with the pattern number 7913, dating it at the year 1848. Documentation: A plate of this service is shown on page 80 of Steven Smith's "Spode & Copeland: Over Two Hundred Years of Fine China and...

The ‘Entente Cordial’ champagne cooler for the British Motor Boat Club, 1905
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
The ‘Entente Cordial’ silver champagne cooler for the British Motor Boat Club, 1905. This deep cylindrical bowl by Charles Townley and John Thomas is of heavy gauge with a raised circular foot, two acanthus scroll handles and cut-card acanthus leaves around the base. The inscription on the silver reads ‘The “Entente Cordial” Cup Presented to the British Motor Boat Club by Mrs Walker Munroe, 1905, won by 1905 Aug 7 “Napier II” J. Scott Montagu, Lionel de Rothschild, 1906 Aug 6 ‘Yarrow Napier’ Lionel de Rothschild.’ Assayed for Charles Townley and John Thomas, London 1904, retailed by F B Thomas & Co. Provenance: Lionel de Rothschild, Exbury and J Scott Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu Edmund de Rothschild, Exbury. The ‘Entente Cordiale Cup’ was the prize at the club’s race meeting at Burnham on Crouch in August 1905 in honour of a visit from the French Navy. Lionel and John had great success in the new Napier II and Achillée millefeuille Napier motor boats. The Napier II was fitted with the largest six-cylinder engine ever built by Selwyn Edge. In 1905 the pair won a 35 mile race across the Arcachon basin, France, in a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, 26 seconds. The following year they broke Dorothy Levitt’s world water speed record at 28.8 knots and in 1907 won the prestigious ‘Perla del Mediterraneo’ on Lionel’s boat, the ‘Flying Fish’. Selwyn Francis Edge (1868–1940) was a British entrepreneur who successfully became ‘a motor car, cycle, launch, and flying machine manufacturer’. He built and raced de Dion...

Antique Sterling Silver Tea and Sugar Cadies
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A magnificent, fine and impressive set of three antique Georgian English sterling silver sugar and tea caddies - boxed; an addition to our silver teaware collection These magnificent, fine and impressive antique Georgian silver sugar and tea caddies each have an oblong shaped form. The surface of each antiquecaddy is embellished with impressive embossed and chased scroll and foliate decoration incorporating a stylised animalistic mask to the upper portion. The decoration to either side incorporates a scene depicting a woman arranging flowers, and the posterior surface bears a structure, all in the chinoiserie style. The anterior surfaces these antique tea caddies incorporate scroll and leaf bordered cartouches, each displaying a contemporary engraved coat of arms. The opposing scrolling lower portion of each caddy composes a shaped rim and foot. These caddies are fitted with the original hinged cast silver covers, ornamented with further foliate and floral decoration and surmounted with impressive floral finials. These Georgian silver tea caddies and sugar canister are fitted to the fine and impressive, original hinged wood and skin covered presentation casket, bearing the original velvet lined interior. The presentation box is fitted with the original silver escutcheon and carrying handle, in addition to four bracket style feet emanating from the corners. These magnificent silver boxes are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. Condition These antique 18th century tea/sugar caddies are a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition. The cast, embossed and chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved ornamentation is very crisp; the definition of these details indicates these caddies have seen little or no use. The original casket is distressed in keeping with age, however, remains in working condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caddies are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the magnificent gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these 18th century tea caddies. Dimensions Sugar Caddy...
