Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS
The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.
Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.
Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer.
Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.
The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.
As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.
Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

"William Thon (1906-2000) was an American artist noted for highly abstracted landscape paintings. He debuted as a professional artist in 1939 at the Corcoran Gallery Biennial* exhibition. He was born in New York City in 1906, and spent his childhood summers camping on Staten Island. He also developed a great love of travel, and in 1933 made an eight-month voyage to the Cocos Islands in the Pacific.
He joined the Navy during World War II, and shortly after the war won the Prix de Rome*, a fellowship in Rome to the American Academy,* which he later served as trustee. Recognition for him continued with his participation in the 1942 "Artists for Victory" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art*, and in 1944, Midtown Galleries in New York held his first one-person show. This gallery then continued to be his representative throughout his career. He had subsequent solo exhibitions at Smith College Art Museum, Fort Wayne Museum and Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine. He earned an honorary Doctor of Arts from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1957, and was a member of The American Academy* and Institute of Arts and Letters, as well as the National Academy of Design*.
In 1947, the year-long study at the American Academy proved highly influential on his career, especially with him beginning to paint as much with watercolor as oil. Returning to America, he submitted a watercolor into the 1949 exhibition of the National Academy of Design, and that year was voted into Academy membership. From thereon, he exhibited frequently at the Academy and won prizes including the Benjamin Altman Prize* in 1951, 1954, 1961, 1967 and 1969.

Eugenio Fernandez Granell
As a Surrealist artist, Eugenio's work is principally characterized by its bright and vivid colors that explore nature and the indigenous symbolism of the Americas. His most famous works include Autorretrato (1944), Elegía por Andrés Nin (1991) as well as Crónica de los fiscales de los años horrendos (1986). Granell's work has been incorporated into exhibitions in the Maeght Gallery, the Bodley Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art as well as The Museum of Contemporary Art alongside other Surrealists such as André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. Granell also dedicated himself as a poet, essayist and novelist, publishing 15 books in all. Some his first, and most prominent works, include "El hombre verde" (The Green Man, 1944) and Lo que sucedió (What Occurred), a book he illustrated and designed himself which won Mexico's Don Quixote novel prize in 1969. From the mid-1960s until retirement, he was professor of Spanish literature at Brooklyn College. The Eugenio Granell Foundation was inaugurated in 1995 to conserve the life and work of the artist with an expansive collection of his oils, drawings, constructions, collages and archives. Important watercolour on paper 'Untitled' by the great Italian artist Riccardo Licata.
Dated and signed at lower right "74 Licata".
This work is representative at the highest level of the great artist of Piedmontese origin; his abstract sign, a very personal artistic signature, recalls the greatest Italian abstract artists such as Giuseppe Capogrossi or Corrado Cagli.
This painting, never before on the market, comes from a private collection and is beautified by an impressive vintage frame in silvered metal, in almost perfect condition.

Riccardo Licata (Turin, 20 December 1929 - Venice, 19 February 2014) was an Italian painter and mosaicist.
He was born in Turin on 20 December 1929.
His family first moved to Paris and then to Rome, where he lived from 1935 to 1945. In 1946, he moved with his mother to Venice.
In 1947, he enrolled at the Liceo Artistico.
He studied Bauhaus culture and began to try his hand at mosaics. He met the artists Santomaso, Vedova, Viani, Turcato and Birolli.

powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010).
The expressive brushstrokes are typical for the style of Vijlbrief, connecting him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a great example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible piece. Signed in top corner and verso signed, dated and titled.
Ernst Vijlbrief, born November 25th, 1934, in Utrecht studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at the Academia di Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In the late fifties, after moving to Amsterdam in 1958, he painted in an expressive style, similar to CoBrA. In 1961 he took part in the large exhibition “Jongere Nederlandse schilders, beeldhouwers en architekten: Liga Nieuw Beelden” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Next to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an engaged board member of several artist associations, like the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional Association of Visual Artists). In 1973 he cofounded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht, with artist Bob Bonies. His work is held in collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Cobramuseum in Amstelveen, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and The Ferens Art Gallery UK. Vijlbrief died at the age of 76 in 2010.

A large and evocative circa 1950 framed impressionist landscape oil painting on canvas titled “Princeton Beach [Boat Repair]” by noted northern California artist William “Will” E. Frates (b. 1896–1969).
Captivating coastal setting depicts an unassuming barn-like structure beside a pair of fishing boats in dry dock, one of which is on stilts with figures discernible on deck going about their repairs. Sandy shoreline terrain in the foreground and turquoise-colored waters in the cove lead to a sliver of beach below verdant foothills in the distance that rise up into a cloud-filled sky.
Earthy palette punctuated by reddish-orange pops of color that capture the warm glow of an inimitable California sunset on the building, boat hulls, and a section of water. Artist’s loose yet assured brushwork on wonderful display throughout, with impressionistic details and textures that reward those who lean in for a closer look.
Based on Frates’ San Francisco Bay Area roots and the title, the setting could be somewhere near Princeton-by-the-Sea just north of Half Moon Bay, which is a short drive south of San Francisco on scenic Highway 1.
Signed on front at bottom and signed, titled, priced, and notated in pencil on verso. Title on verso appears to have originally been “Princeton Beach Boat Repair”, with “Boat Repair” having been crossed out. Original circa 1950 price was possibly overwritten from “$200” to “$300”, which in either case translates to nearly $4,000 in today’s dollars.
Presented in its original plaster-coated wood frame with painted faux-stone finish and painted white wood interior border. Canvas backed by stiff paperboard.
Will Frates was born in Hayward, California in 1896, and was an active, versatile, and very skilled oil, watercolor, pastel, and etchings artist from the 1920s until his passing while on a painting excursion in Myrtle Creek, Oregon in 1969. His subjects were mostly San Francisco Bay Area and California “Mother Lode” landscapes, though he also painted scenes far afield, from New Mexico to the coast of Maine.
